Dark Souls 2 had a huge fan backlash and since Miyazaki didn't even fucking want a DS2 let alone a DS3, he just let DS3 appeal to the fan favorites in the series. and called it a day.

I loved dark souls 3, there I said it. Aside from how shitty it was stacked against invaders, I had a nice time exploring every area, no area felt horribly designed.
Yes I know estus is fucked, I know shields are useless(good), and while I do hate I cannot tank hits, there is just so much of it that I liked that I just cannot rate it lower than dark souls 1.

They tried to make something out of DaS2 though. The scrapped open world game would have been pretty new and exciting. DaS2 was handed off to some eager up-and-comers within Fromsoft and they tried pretty hard to make something worthy of the King's Field pedigree. It even explored ideas other than "kindle or abandon" and "gods are dicks" .

DaS3 is the one where it's clear they ran out of ideas and creativity and phoned it in.

It's pretty clear that no one at From wanted to make Dark Souls 3 but Namco had 'em by the balls after Dark Souls 1 was successful. Dark Souls 1 was basically just ideas from Demon's Souls that they didn't get to implement before Miyazaki moved onto something else, but it being an even bigger success than anticipated meant Namco were gonna go HARD on milking it, so Miyazaki elected not to work on the sequel. The people leading development on 2 had heaps of great ideas on innovating and not just rehashing Dark Souls and had several near complete builds but Namco had them scrap them all because it wasn't enough like the first game in their eyes, and so the final product was literally stitched together from random assets of the older builds into a mediocre clone of Dark Souls 1 and the plot followed suit, becoming just 'lmao cycles'. By the time it came for development on 3 to start everyone was so fed up with Namco that Miyazaki felt obliged to step in and take responsibility for it and try to just get through with as little effort as possible so they could be free from their contract and make literally anything else.
