Yeah, I never reall saw the appeal of CS. I was hooked on BF2 while my friends were still obsessed with CS 1.6, and I remember it looking and playing like a wet turd even back then. It's too simplistic, the weapons/models look atrocious, and it's filled to the brim with third worlders/dregs.

I owned a gaming portal and couple cs 1.6 servers.

The only reason why cs 1.6 was popular (at that time) is because it was PLAYABLE FOR FREE! This comes from guy that lives in central EU, where kids 10-15 years ago had no access to games. I am living a relative big town (around 100k) and there was not a single store where I could buy games. Or like and idea of "buying games". There were no multiplayer games on internet that requier original game.

Warcraft 3 = hacked on garena, cs1.6 = nonsteam versions everywhere. HL 2? lel nobody cares. sc2? we play on LAN on cracked version who needs ORIGINAL.

If you wanted to make a community cs 1.6 server ONLY for steam users, it was dead on arrival. Rusia, ukraine, hungary, poland, czeck republic, slovakia. Pirated/hacked/cracked games ruled here from 2k to 2010.

My first real game on PC was cs1.6 anthology from 2009. Because only at that time there was a pc store where I could buy this. Before only internet cafes were a thing.

Sounds like a really shitty place to live in if you were into gaming. I'm from a small town in northern Scandinavia and there were plenty of stores selling games. Everyone had legitimate copies of 1.6 and there were tons of secure nordic servers.

Also there were tons of legitimate WC3 players. Especially the first couple of years after release, before DotA got big, there were way more playing legit than cracked. (You know garena came 2009?) You have a really revisionist view of gaming in the 2000s. Or maybe it's just a third worlder view.

every single title I owned was pirated. Dad went to business trip to germany around 2000 and got me PS1, cracked. Because there was no place where you can buy games or they were massively overpriced.

Nintendo was non-existend. Everyone owned a console, but only playstation. Some kids played pokemon on gameboys but that was it. Dunno why marketing was so bad for nintendo in post-cummunist countries but playstation was huge.

I got into gaming because of my brother but even he got all pc games cracked or pirated on old cds. It was natural for every kid to play these games for free. Right now, I dont mind downloading a game if I really want to play it (only for single player).
