Is the opening of Skyrim the worst intro in the history of video games?
>>
I never put much thought into it but yes
>>
no. that's a bold claim considering how many bad video games there are out there
>>
>>388154679
no its just boring
>>
Why did Alduin turn up just in time to save the life of the only man who could kill him anyway?
>>
>>388154679
>He doesn't use alternative starts
>>
>>388154679
Far from it. Any game that starts with actually putting the player into the game world is a step in the right direction.

On the other hand any game that starts with lines of text on a black screen, followed by a cutscene, followed by more text/talking is off to a REALLY bad fucking start. Let the player explore the world and learn the things the developer wants to communicate THROUGH the world
>>
>>388154679
Fallout 3 is a fucking slog
>>
Fallout 3 is so much worse
>>
>>388154993
>Let the player explore the world and learn the things the developer wants to communicate THROUGH the world
but skyrim has tutorial prompts
>>

just started a new playthrough the other day and i was wondering this the whole time. if he'd've waited like 2 more minutes he'd conquer the world or whatever he's planning to do

>>388154679

That depends.

Are you playing the game in over 60 FPS?

If you are, it's the best intro ever, with 50% chances you won't make it to the character creation.
>>
>>388154679

I haven't played Skyrim, but it can't be worse than Uriel "autism face" Septim VII's death.
>>
>>388154679
Ehh it established a important character and offers the first choice (goong with the stormcloak or the imperial fella). Biggest critism I have is that it sours players towards the imperials
>>
>>388155310
Kinda funny that the only thing that encourages you to join the stormcloaks is that they didn't arrest you.
>>
>>388154946
>>388155251
Because Bethesda is shit at writing.

but I'm sure some lorefag will come pull something out of his ass inspired by something Kirkbride wrote 20 years ago to justify it
>>
>>388155543
Normies don't much think about the bigger picture in rpgs, imps want to kill me? Stormcloaks are freedom fighters? That's all they need to form an opinion
>>
>>388154679
I just want an Elder Scrolls game where there isn't any bullshit introduction.

Just fucking throw me out in the middle of goddamn nowhere instantly and let me find an introductory quest or die trying.

Also, enough of this bullshit "You're the savior that will fulfill the prophecy!" handholding kiddie crap.
>>
>>388154679
Its just way too fucking long before you even do anything related to gameplay.

The only other thing that's bothering is how fucking convoluted the whole thing.
>this random prison is executing the leader of the stormcloaks
>and a random person that just came to skyrim, they just fucking execute him
>then the only way you're able to escape is if a fucking dragon came and destroyed everything

I know dragons is this game's thing, but calm the fuck down.

If the guy before you let the priest finish the chant he probably would have lived.
>>
>>388154946
I figured that since the Dragonborn is primarily a mortal with the soul of a dragon, and it probably isn't that 'big' or 'notable' of a soul until later on in the game, Alduin couldn't tell who he actually was at the time.

I think this is further implied because, if I remember correctly, Paarthurnax isn't entirely impressed with you until you learn the part of firebreath he gives you and you shout at him, thus proving that you're Dragonborn.

That one in the soul cairn, Duurhnevir or whatever his name was, further reinforces this I think, because he calls you 'Dovah' even when you haven't done the main quest. He's a necromancer, so he probably has a better eye for the properties of souls compared to most other dragons.
>>
but how will you introduce a game without some sort of epic intro to interest your gamer audience!
>>
>>388155943
name a SINGLE (1) game that does this that isn't some indie bullshit or from the SNES gen or earlier
>>
>>388154946
Fate. Fate is always the answer in fantasy plots, it goes with the whole "chosen one" bullshit.

Also because it's fiction and you need a fucking story outside the dragon roasting the protagonist a minute into the game.
>>
>>388154946

>>
>>388154946
>>388155625
I think dragons can sense each other/ sense dragon power. Sort of like how the grey beards can sense the location of word walls.

So Alduin is teleported forward in time after his fight with those warriors. He arrives right when you're going to be executed, flies over to kill you, but ends up helping you escape.
>>
>>388156596
Bioshock.

Nothing fucking to it, you're just a guy that found your way to rapture.

>>
>>388156596
Arguably, Diablo 2.

Ignoring the skippable intro cinematic,
>Literal random nobody traveler that ends up in an amazon encampment
>You're never hailed as a savior, just some guy
>Most events in the game happen before you even arrive
>Literally no boss gives a flying fuck about you, or who you are, and makes no attempt to claim you as any sort of hero
>The goddamn angel even treats you as a peon and just throws you out into the wild before taking the glory moment for himself
>>
>>388155273
You're gonna have to provide me with some video footage of someone fucking with Skyrim with the result that the carriage from the beginning drives straight off the mountain.
>>
>>388155310
Beth couldn't find a reason to join the stormcloaks,so they had to resort to this.

TBF,the game's been out for almost 6 years and nobody found a reason yet.
>>388154946
It's easy to explain.I made some possible reasons, and you pick the one that makes more sense to you.

>He didn't know who was Ulfric,so he tried to attack as soon as possible
>He saw a guy who wasn't a footsoldier about to be killed and decided to not risk
>He thought Ulfric tried to enter Skyrim disguised
>He thought Ulfric was forced to use tattered clothes at his execution,so he would suffer this humiliation in Sovngarde.
>He thought the imperials would kill Ulfric ASAP,especialy because the Thalmor helped their pawn scape Impérial custody twice.
>The prisoner wasn't a dragonborn until he/she found the "Fus" world wall.
>>
>>388154679
I was pretty excited to play this in 2011. Game of that year for sure.
>>
>>388154679
MGS V is worse

You literally have to hold forward for an hour just to make Kojimbo's shitty cinematic end and the gameplay begins
>>
>>388157067
This. I actually like a little on rail segment with exposition or dramatic dialogue, but it lasts so goddamn long and means fucking nothing. That entire game is told through bullshit asspull monologues written like teenage poetry

>It's that grim blackness within you, that tears at your soul and sickens your stomach, that drives you longingly toward a destiny that was never yours to claim. Viscous and pungent as it is. Steel yourself! This is only one more mountain between you and forever

See? Pulled that directly out of my ass. Doesn't mean shit. It's just that over and over and over.
>>
>>388154679
Oblivion's intro was way worse.
>>
>>388157358
>Just some guy that everbody asks for help
>>
Any intro with the prisoner being the starter is retarded. Daggerfall is superior due to the fact you have many back ground to choose from and the starter area is a giant tomb. It also one of the reason why Alternate Start Mod are popular mods for any Elder Scroll since it doesn't fuck up your role playing.
>>
>>388157572
I always thought MGS V's intro was fucking off as hell

Mainly because most of the game is in wide-open spaces but the intro gameplay only teaches you how to play extremely close-quarter interiors. Makes no fuckin' sense
>>
KH2.

Fucking hell.
>>
>>388157651
No. Oblivion was bad and overly long.
Skyrims was obnoxiously long and mostly pointless
>>
>>388156840
>cutscene
>walk for 15 seconds
>another cutscene
not nearly as bad as skyrim, but come on. it's still an intro, it doesn't "instantly" throw you into the real game. it's also completely linear with no enemies so there's no chance that you'll "die trying."
>>
>>388157705
You're missing the point.

You're never hailed as some hero that can actually pull off the task. You're just asked to do it. Along the way, you find thousands of dead bodies trailing towards your objectives. Any one of those could have been trying to complete it as well.
>>
>>388157730
It makes sense if you take into account that Kojimbo is a fucking retard

>>388157868
Yet you never meet those others and everything revolves around you.
>>
>>388154679
>not Half Life
K
>>
>>388157641
>Viscous and pungent as it is.
indeed it is my dear, quite pungent.
>>
>>388154679
Alternative starts are required for anything past the first playthrough in these games.
>>
>>388157962
Still missing the point. Everything revolves around you because you choose it to be. Nobody goes out of their way to recognize you as anything more than some random mercenary.

Compare that to Skyrim. You're dropped into the game and 99% of it consists of you being jacked off and praised as the Dragonborn, savior of the world.

Do you get what I'm saying here?

What ever happen to RPG starting out in an Inn or Tavern? It was all over the place during the tabletop days but for some reason, they vanish in vidya. It was vague enough just so any one could come in and form their character. It was important enough to have bullion boards full of jobs that your team would get and do. Bards Tale and Wizardary 1 is the only one I could think of off top of my head.

I've never actually played Skyrim for that long, but how does this intro actually make sense for your character to join anyone the Imperials? Like you would only join them because you have already decided before you started playing the game that you want to, it doesn't really make sense for your in-game character to join up with the guys who were all set to execute you.

My theory is Dragons can sense one another because they are all Akatosh, this includes all Dragonborn. The Dragonborn was the first Dragon "presence" Alduin sensed so he made a beeline for him/her since Alduin holds domain over all Dragons and likely wanted to see what the fuck was going on.
>>
>>388159539

I can think of dozens of JRPGs I will never play again due to the shit opening hours. Because Akatosh had changed to the point where they didn't want the timeline to be eaten by the world-eater so it manipulated the time for Alduin to come back to be precisely when an incarnation of Talos was right by. Alduin popped out of the timehole and flew to the nearest human settlement to the Throat of the World (Helgen) because that what is in his nature to do.

The bigger villain is the bitch Imperial captain who wants to execute you despite not being on any sort of list of rebels they're there to execute and in most possibilities is a race of man, mer, or beast that the Stormcloaks want fucking nothing to do with.
>>

She got charred alive, right? I don't remember that intro for a while. Also, I want to kill that "Blade" bitch that thinks she runs the place.
>>
>>388161321
naw its the simplest way for them to do a blank slate that had to deal with some shit. Since one can either assume their character is genuinely a criminal or they can assume they were wrongfully convicted of something or other.

But since both end with the character being held prisoner in some way and eventually either being released or running away by whatever plot device. It then adds a bit to the suspension disbelief that due to what the blank slate character has been through they were hard of have been harden enough to be able to go out and adventure in the world.

Yeah its a bit contrived but there is an actual reason for it the way it is for the sake of role playing purposes.
>>
>>388159526
Yeah so ingame it doesn't actually make sense to join the Imperials without some contrived reason you have to make up yourself beforehand.

I bet Delphine was expecting to find other dragonborns since you happened to show up and thought the bloodline still existed when in reality the dragonborns except Miraak died with Martin and the Last Dragonborn is just an aspect of Lorkhan and therefore Talos and therefore has Tiber Septim's dovahkin nature.

No. Simplest way to have a blank state is either getting off the boat in a traveling agency or in an inn, which I mention earlier. >>388162810
Except no. Only a dragon born or a high level moth priest who also happened to be a powerful user of the Voice could have done that. You think anybody who knows what an Elder Scroll does would have been capable of utilizing it like LDB does to learn Dragonrend without going insane or blind? The Elder Scrolls are aspects of Akatosh and the only reason they don't cook your brain when you use them is because you're dovahkin and share that link with Akatosh as well.

You seem to be missing the point that only dovahkin can kill the otherwise immortal and unkillable dragons by literally ripping out their soul and eating it. Alternate Start - Live Another Life
You wake up in a cell, speak to a statue and from there you decide what you want to do.
>>
>>388163649
Wait a second, why not just capture Alduin then? Like you do with that other dragon in the main quest, Alduin is not killed therefore it can't re-incarnate nor it can keep reviving other dragons.
Better yet, go to where dragon burials are and smash the bones into dust so theres nothing for Alduin to revive wich should be easy their tombs are easily recognizable and Alduin is just 1 dragon that could be defeated by a couple guards and a shopkeeper.
>>
>>388158574
Just download an alternate start mod, or stop playing on consoles you plebian.
>>
>>388163776
Skyrim Unbound allows you to turn off dragons, choose whether you're the Dragonborn or not, choose a faction, choose your starting gear and location, etc.
>>
>>388163048
No, Ulfric took more than a decade to learn Fus Roh Dah with the Greybeards, which is the only shout he knows.
>>
>>388163353
His dragons can be killed, only Alduin is the immortal one that is capable of resurrecting his own army. The other ones stay dead as long as papa Al isn't around to shout them back to life.
>>
>>388164045
Also wasn't Alduin defeated like a thousand years ago? Did nords seriously didn't invent anything in all that time that could help them defeat dragons? Skyrim is fucking full of monsters, you would expect them to be really well armed.
>>
>>388164045
i don't think you can summon alduin with a shout, either that or his thu'um is more powerful than yours or whatever
also, i think as long as any fragment of the dragon is present and its soul isn't destroyed alduin can recreate it, so even the dust could reform

The races of Nirn are too complacent due to their reliance on magic to develop any technology worthwhile. The only people who developed anything of worth were the Dwemer and they accidentally glitched themselves out of existence.
>>
It's pretty good for what it is. introduces the major factions, gives you a hook for the plot, introduces the main bad guy, and has ~action~.

If you're only going to do one playthrough of skyrim, maybe 2, like most normies do, you won't mind, but autists who play it over and over will get sick of it because the intro drags on and on.

Man why are game locations never as lively as real life places are? You never see a Tavern in Syrim that looks this cool
>>
>>388164078
That's pretty rad. I might just reinstall it.
>>
>>388164187
Nords are idiots, they'd prefer to arm wrestle bears and drown themselves in mead 24/7.
>>
>>388161468
There's nothing contrarian about saying skyrim's intro is horrible and does not represent anything in the game.

They still could've tried something, their reaction to an ancient evil awakening was "lets give 1500 gold and a pat on the back to this magical guy that we met today to save the country".
The plot in Skyrim is fucking retarded, there is so much shit wrong now that I think about it.

KOTOR I and II both have worse intros, especially 2 which takes over an hour
>>

Holy shit TP intro drags forever. I remember being stuck in the tiny village well after 3 hours of play.

>>
>>388164635
You don't need banana skin to recognize the cultural failings of the Nords. They barely rank above goblins.
>>
what's with all these last gen games having awful intros? like why the the fuck did this become a developer trend to slowly introduce players into the game with boring ass cutscenes.
>>
>>388165551
That sounds like something only a fucking elf would say.
>>
Skyward Sword, Twilight Princess, and Kotor 1 are worse. Kotor 2's intro is bad after your first playthrough
>>
Meh, as a fan of the series none of the other Elder Scrolls intros were too exciting either. IMO ESO has the best intro and that's not saying much.
>>
>>388165657
Devs have been trying to make games into movies, movies usually start with a long intro.
>>
>>388154679
It's not great for repeat playthroughs because it's pretty long. Also, a lot of the dialogue was unnecessarily hamfisted.

It certainly could have been worse if they taught you nothing about the mechanics. As much as people bitch about it, the New Vegas railroad tutorial was better in my eyes.

Elves, or anyone with enough awareness to recognize the value of magic and technology over drunken, primal brawn. Nords love dying meaningless, 'glorious' deaths so much that they're constantly killing each other, the sooner they destroy themselves the better.
>>
>>388162536
>>388157402
Has nothing to do with the individual mods. It's mods initializing scripts that throws off the physics system's timing.

This mod fixes the problem:

>Nords love dying meaningless, 'glorious' deaths so much that they're constantly killing each other, the sooner they destroy themselves the better.
This would hold a lot more weight if you don't go to sovngarde in the game and find out nords that die good deaths really do get eternal bliss
>>
>>388166635
He's right you know
>>
>>388166873
That reminds me, what happens to the souls that Alduin eats?
>>
>>388158294
Another reason Dragon's Crown is fucking goat.
>>
>>388167085
he consumes them like the dragonborn consumes dragon souls

souls in TES never really ever stop existing but getting eaten comes close, they're basically just trapped in dull nothingness within whoever ate them up
>>
>>388154993
but how is a boring unskipable set piece any better? At least with the latter, you have the option to skip directly to the gameplay. In Skyrim you're forced to sit in the wagon for five minutes before you can even make your character. There isn't even a single dialogue box to say what you were doing crossing the border where you could say shit like "just passing through" or "i'm a dickass thief on the run"

It's sort of like Evangelion with the primordial soup making up "life". Any souls outside of an afterlife/that are intentionally destroyed are recycled with other souls into NEW souls, effectively extinguishing whatever individual that soul once belonged to and making them for all reasoning completely dead/nonexistent. If they're not in sovengarde/whatever other afterlife, they're simply dead as somebody in real life would be.

If Alduin had succeeded in eating every soul, every soul in the world would have been recycled and the cycle would have started anew.
>>
Morrowind OP > Oblivion OP > Skyrim OP.

Morrowind has the best open-ended beginning, Oblivion gives you a clear goal on the main questline and introduces you to main actors in the script before telling you to fuck off.

Skyrim kills 90% of the NPCs involved in the OP and basically holds your hand right the way through the game.
>>
>>388163907
I loved TP's beginning

>Start as any elf race
>Entire world dynamic for 4E is Nords and Redguards hate Elves because Imperials won't stop sucking their dicks.
>Nords in Windhelm and Ulfric are blatantly racist against elves, even the Dunmer who are demon worshipers who couldn't give two shits if they worship Talos or not.

There's also the fact that it's the Stormcloaks' fault that you're there in the first place. Maybe the player shares the opinion of Lokir? They never explicitly say you were doing anything illegal, so maybe kissing ass and helping a legionaire escape is a good way to prove you're not on the wrong side?

Skyrim is an ocean of incoherency, your race should be an important factor, a high elf pc shouldn't be allowed to join the stomcloak, khajit PC shouldn't be able to enter cities, just like every other khajit, but you could give them something in return, unique thalmor quest for PC for example, or bandit quest for khajit, too bad

Morrowind and oblivion firmly established your character as an absolute fucking nobody, while skyrim basically tells you you're a dragon's waifu.

Oblivion is one of the most boring video game openings I have ever played. Skyrim was at least a step in the right direction, despite also being shit.
