What happened to videogames.
Why are they so shit nowadays?

Why are best games are some indie some bloke was making for 10-15 years and only releases now.

why this

ur right gonna play next copy of TES which will be copy of Skyrim which is copy of Oblivion which is copy of Morrowind which is copy of....[...]

very fun
>>
>>388149112
If all a game has going for it is one story, well it probably doesn't fit the 'timeless game' label.
Now good multiplayers on the other hand... repeatable, slightly varied, consensual insanity, now that's quality
>>
>>388150023
Like Battleborn, Lawbreakers?
same concept
>>
>>388148314
its not just videogames
you can observe the same trend in music and movies as well
>>
>>388150371
so what the solution
what do
>>
>>388150371
Yeah. It's quite fascinating, because it's not happening just now, either. If you look around people who are past 18, they will report the same experience of cultural and medial decay, and it does not even matter when they were born. It quite amazing, really.
>>
>>388150737
Become a little more self aware and realize that it's a matter of perception far more than anything else, and that you are going through the same shit everyone goes? There is an entire set of episodes in fucking Southpark about this, and it was probably released before you were allowed to browse web without supervision.
>>
>>388150921
which episodes are those? Wanna check a look
>>
>>388151001
The episode in particular is unsurpisingly called "You are getting old". I think it bleeds into a follow-up episode, but it's been six years since it's release.

I did watch SP back then it just could not stomatch its a bit extreme humor for long, got over saturated quickly.

I might have never got to that one or just skipped
>>
>>388148314
As soon as vidya became big business it died. Publishers want dollars and they have shareholders to pay.
>>
>>388151391
To be honest, I don't exactly love SP either. My whole point is that this "everything is turning to shit" being an absolutely normal part of growing up (and something that you should outgrow too) that SP made fun of it years ago.

There are undeniable trends in gaming that make modern gaming different than gaming prior.
>The focus on tech rather the actual game design.
>Gaming becoming more about being "cinematic" or "immersive"
>Casualization to reach every possible market.
These are just a few examples.

>>388152952
You know that the casualization had hit its peak around the release of Dark Souls, right? Ever since then AAA games became a bit harder or rather required you to actually play.

Every entertainment medium goes through similar phases

>phase one: kinda weird and unsure of what to do with said medium
>phase two: experimentation. This is the golden area typically where companies/individuals aren't sure what the customer wants and tries anything and everything
>phase three: corporate takes over and medium slowly dies with lack of originality and passion

Tv, comic books, vidya games, movies, etc
>>
>>388153259
>So ever since Atari's Pongbox or do you mean like NES/SNES?
Probably more around the Xbox 360 era I suppose? Like that was definitely the decline. I mean gaming was very popular before then, but at 360 seemed to be where things started to go wrong

>>388152952
>The focus on tech rather the actual game design.
Yeah, because that totally wasn't a thing in the late 90's.
>Gaming becoming more about being "cinematic" or "immersive"
Fist of all, that has hardly been a an overwhelming trends since Minecraft, Dark Souls and retro-gaming became major forces in the industry.

Second of all, I'm gonna go ahead and assume you WEREN'T AROUND the time Medal of Honor, Call of Duty (the original ones), Max Payne, Mafia, and the whole fucking trend of Immersive Sims was the name of the game, right?
>Casualization to reach every possible market.
Again, not really fucking true for about four of five years now.
I don't know if you people are still just stuck in 2011, or if you weren't even around and are now just parroting what you heard older /v/ users say.

>>388153327
Yeah, I think the discussion can end here. You realize that you have became a caricature of the very thing you claim to hate, right? Yeah, you don't really have to bother replying.
>>
>>388152470
This. Cultural marxism is rotting our society from the inside, feminism and white-shaming propaganda is used to slowly destroy the white race, and vidya is now just one propaganda tentacle of all that cancer aiming for the destruction of our society, values and race. Western civilization has never been so close to death as it is now.
>>
At this point I don't even play new games anymore I just replay my old ones
>>
>>388152952
>Casualization to reach every possible market.

I really don't understand this one. A lot of series were extremely successful doing their own thing and then they shot their own foot because they decided they weren't getting enough cash

>hey guys Halo is so last year lets add call of duty elements!
>World of Warcraft is cool and all with it's 12 million subscribers paying for the base game and expansions and subscribing but I hear if we dumb down the game so 4 year old Timmy can beat raids we can get even more money!
>>
>>388153631
>Yeah, I think the discussion can end here. You realize that you have became a caricature of the very thing you claim to hate, right? Yeah, you don't really have to bother replying.
Kill yourself, SJW cuck.
>>
>>388152470
Well I mean a lot of my favorite games did come out around 2000-2004. I don't buy or play many new games now but I've still found a few games within the past few years that I've really enjoyed.

I think there's a bit of stagnation though. We either need to get great quality VR games to see more great things happening or to have a massive improvement in AI. It's really disappointing to see a game that's lauded as the best thing ever but the AI still acts like it did 15 years ago.

FIFA/sports games are nothing new at all though.

What?

>>
>>388153592
That's the logic of cancerous neo-gamers. They basically haven't played a good game in their life, intact they hate anything from the 90s and early 2000s, because that was a time when SJW didn't take over the world.

>>388153719
Glad you can agree, as well as most of this thread. Prepare to see the good old days erased one by one, as they replace it with pure cultural marxism.

>>388153765

>>
>>388152547
It was the year when the cultural marxists started an all-front cultural attack on the western society, lacing every piece of entertainment with their propaganda and popularizing social media to spread their ideas to everyone, everyday.
>>
>>388153592
The reason why Dark Souls blew up like that is because other games were so shit easy though.

>>
How do I join the fight against cultural marxism?
>>
>>388153719
>Western civilization has never been so close to death as it is now.
We had been literally minutes away from extermination of all life about seventy years ago, kid. So no.
And yeah, the "cultural marxism" (which is a term that is going to immediately get you laughed out of any educated discussion by the way) is a problem. Influence of left wing ideology grows in the west and it's a seriously, seriously bad thing.

If you really cared though, you would not be fucking whining about videogames on an anonymous board. The reality is that this is all just a convenient excuse for you to feel sorry for yourself and yet superior to others while you yourself are still the same pile of deluded shit.

So fuck off. Just because the scapegoat you make for yourself also happens to be losely related to something real does not make you not part of the problem.
>>
Reminder that all of Generation Z aka SJW are partaking in a full erasure of products from the 90s, those with an actual soul and heart. They will be replaced with the most shameless of lefty propaganda afterwards. That's all it will ever be.

Forever.
>>
>>388154134
Soccer itself has been super diverse for a long time so I dont see how they could do it.
>>
I finally figured out that they're not really any worse, they just fill a completely different role in my life now. Worrying nonstop about my social status or insecurities made video games a convenient escape when I was younger. I was a success when I beat a friend in Mario Kart or if I finished a whole game.

Now, I'm more or less focused on entertainment value alone and how well I'm engaged with any particular video game. On the whole, I think games have gotten much better, they're just not my comfy escape like they used to be. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug, and I remember some not-so-great games as benchmarks solely because that was the best part of my day growing up, constantly changing schools and never having many friends.

Well, you could look Jordan Peterson, he is just about the most sensible person talking about this subject.
But I'm afraid he won't tell you what you really want to hear. He'll tell you to become a decent fucking human being yourself before you start a crusade. And he right about that.
Besides that, you can go into academia. Educate yourself on the subject, ACTUALLY educate yourself, not internet-educate yourself. Which means that you will have to actually change your own views in the process too. Once you become respectable in your field, you can start teaching, writing, speaking against things that are wrong. But it does assume that you have to become right yourself, and that is not an easy or fast process.

You can talk about it with those who are willing to listen in the meanwhile, vote when there is something to vote for, etc...

The problem is that you really do have to get rid of your own bullshit though. Otherwise no matter what you do, you'll end up causing more harm than good.

And there isn't any other way, either. Not one that would work and not cause more damage than anything.
>>
A lot of games don't leave lasting impressions now, but we are in the best age for timesinks I feel. A lot of indie games that cost me $5 yield hundreds of hours. I used to get kind of depressed "What the fuck do I do now?" when I beat a game, but now there's always that timesink game waiting for me to go back to.

>Umad Goldstein?
Not really, I think you're just a bit obsessive and paranoid. I'm not saying you're entirely wrong about everything but you reasons are too singular and demonizing.

Video games are more popular now. There's a lot of money to be made from them. The higher ups have an obligation to make as much money as possible for the company. Doing so requires appealing to as many people as possible who will pay for the game. But doing so also means that it won't appeal to people who are more invested in gaming and appreciate things on a different level. There also isn't much reason for them to innovate if it won't make them money, and there's a bit of a stagnation problem with hardware and AI, although that seems to be lessening with more companies working on VR games or showing off their AI more and more.

You can do it too, anon. I was NEET status for a few months and finally decided that what I wanted out of life more than anything else was to never feel like somebody was breathing down my neck. I wanted nobody else's rules, nobody else's chores, and no sense of obligation towards anybody because they still paid a bill or would send money if I needed help. Getting 100% out on my own for the first time was all the help I ever needed. It's a thrilling sensation to never owe anybody, and to start feeling like you owe yourself. You start caring about how things affect you in the long-term and you manage your life better. Having only yourself to rely on makes an enormous difference and I can't recommend it enough.
