I alternate between both soundtracks every time I replay the game and the US one really grows on you. It also changes the atmosphere of the game in a really interesting way too. Definitely recommend trying it out.

you can perfect the game until Quarts Quad. 2 then you'll have all the time stones so you can just go insane

I love it, ironically I think the CD style bonus stages are the weakest part of the game because their not enough like the CD bonus stages, kind of a mish mash of CD and Sonic 2's half pipe sprint.

CD has shit level design outside of one or two zones, a pointless gimmick (literally no reason to ever go to future), the worst bosses in the series and exploration that barely rewards you for finding the generators (not to mention how after you find the generators the rest of the zones are boring as hell with nothing else in them)

t played the updated release before mania

CD is fun because you can do some fun pathbreaking shit with the spin dash and super peel out combined with CD's improved air control
I'm glad they brought that back for Mania

Am I wrong for thinking the US soundtrack fits the tone of the game overall? It's so much more moody and dark.
The JP soundtrack is more upbeat, fun and energetic, but the US soundtrack fits a level like Stardust Speedway Bad Future more.

My best guess is that CD was made by the Sonic 1 team and super sonic didnt' show up until Sonic 2 which was made by Sega in America.
