The dialogue is usually super fucking cheesy or dumb anyway, at least if I listen to it in Japanese I can't fucking understand it.

I would also consider a dub bad if I can't understand any of it. So I don't try to impress anyone and just stick with the language I speak.

The same is - almost - as true when it comes to chinese cartoons, with the exception of maybe 3 outliers where the dub is superior to the japanese original: Baccano, Black Lagoon and Ghost Stories. And the original Baccano and Black Lagoon japanese tracks are really good, it's just that their dubs are just that amazing.

By the way, I did end up learning japanese (I've scanlated, released chinese cartoon subs as [anonymous], and released a few doramas and variety shows with some groups), so no, it's not "a language I can't understand". I'm old as dirt now. But that wasn't always the case, and even when I didn't know japanese, the quality of the acting was palpable, and after learning of the particularities of each language's VA industry, the reasons are obvious.

It's easy to get emotions from instrumentals when it's built in the same foundation of literally all the music your culture creates. You don't get the same feeling from a completely different musical structure. Language is the same. It's easy to discern inflections in languages based on Latin or Germanic roots if you speak English, but not nearly as easily in a completely foreign Asiatic language.

The reason listening to the audio in the original voices is often better is because the original author or director is there or on hand and can help make sense of the scene. Dubs there's a lot of guess work(and in most cases the voice director does not care and just wants to get paid so he doesn't even direct. Leaving the actor doing all the guess work). This is not just for japanese things.

The biggest problem with dubs for me is the teenage/young adult characters (which are a majority of Japanese characters). It's a suspension of disbelief thing; if the character is talking in a language that isn't reflected in his mouth movements you can't properly suspend that disbelief.

It's more realistic for characters to talk in different languages to eachother (english dude speaks english to japanese dude and vice versa) because you could suspend your disbelief by thinking that the characters understand both languages but prefer to talk in their own.
