It's very rare to not be able to use whatever you like best against 95% of the player base. Most people aren't good enough to stop you from playing how you want if you're decent yourself. Just because someone is eventually going to beat you, doesn't mean you should be afraid to use your favorites.

I always pick the characters based on whether I like them as a character or I feel their moveset resonates with my play style. I generally gravitate towards the former at first and then use arcade mode to experiment with the latter. Ultimately, in the better fighting games, it comes down to the player's personal skill.

I just continue to play it because I like the playstyle of the character. I've tried out other characters mainly because I wanted to branch out and learning those characters would let me fight better against them, but I didn't have as much fun.

i try to pick a mid or high tier who i also like.

What most people fail to understand is that pokemon is not a game where everything is equal at endgame. That's what competitive is, it's pokemon once you strip away any time constraints or difficulty in getting them to max level
So Dragonite is super strong, right? But in game it's going to be total shit for the longest time. Meanwhile Hypno is far weaker, but it evolves much earlier, learns all its relevant moves earlier and contributes far more to your team throughout the game. Even though it's weak competitively, it's very strong in game because you don't have to baby it. It's the classic crutch character/growth unit thing.
This means it's a given that some pokemon are going to be stronger/weaker at endgame, because the commitment to make them strong is far greater. Butterfree has shit stats because it evolves at like level 13. If it had god tier stats/moves it'd be totally broken in game. So they made it weaker, because pokemon has to strike a balance between ingame and endgame. Expecting all pokemon to compete at the same level is unreasonable

I can't remember the actualy article, but there was an analysis of people in WoW playing a spec they liked vs. a spec that generally simmed better, and "playing a spec you like" meant players performed about 30% better on avarage vs. a spec they did not enjoy, but was better on paper.

Too often I have a character I love, but hate playing, or a character I love playing but hate hearing talk, how they look. Cody from Street Fighter Alpha and IV fits both, but even in MOBAs or class/hero based shooters too.
