Fallout 2 is a lot like 1 but longer. Not as well made in some aspects, but if you want more you'll probably love it.
>>
The overall playtime really depends on how much and where you explore, and how quickly you stumble upon some of the story objectives. It's easy to waste weeks in OG Fallout games.
>>
>>388070697
most of the good shit from that made it into nv
a new isometric game would be neat tho
>>
Is there a patch to fix the combat freezing bug in Fallout 2 windowed mode? (I can't play on full screen, video doesn't display for some reason. Maybe a patch for that would be useful too.)
>>
>>388070572
I was retarded the first time I played fallout, and probably still am, plus I didn't use guides or anything.
On my first playthrough I never discovered you could enter buildings with closed doors in cities, so I missed out on ALL indoor shops and a bunch of helpful things and events that I discovered existed on my second playthrough. I got all of my items from random encounters and scavenging. I bought the water to get bonus days, somehow managed to get the power armor and beat the mutant guy with only a couple of days left.
Every encounter was critical because I had extremely limited stimpaks and ammo, so I played through a retardedly hard and involuntarily imposed challenge. It was the most intense RPG experience I have had, and every playthrough after that one felt dissapointing.

10/10 would recommend.
>>
I wish the game gave you more ways to find the water chip other than going to Necropolis

I started a playthrough the other day and got really into it trying to follow clues and ended up in the Glow before I realized that I already knew where to go and was only wasting time. Then I went full speedrun mode for some reason.

Shitsux.

>I never discovered you could enter buildings with closed doors in cities
kek
Damn that must have been harsh.
>It was the most intense RPG experience I have had, and every playthrough after that one felt dissapointing.
You could play as a low INT character maybe it'll make you relive that. And it might be more immersive for you.
>>
i hate how you have to kill the master in like 100 days or oops everyone fucking dies in the end
just makes a short game even shorter
>>
>>388074769
Yeah, yeah I deserve that. I have never dun goofd like this in any other game. I played through it 3 more times, edgy run, woman character run and 0 (or as low as it gets, I don't remember) int run. That first one was the best, I think it best captured the tone and feel the game is going after.
>>
>>388074823
I like the idea of a time limit on paper. It avoids the problem of having a story that requires urgency but have the player run around doing menial bullshit side content.

It's the reason why the first playthrough works so well. You're scrambling to find where to go and get dragged into all kinds of trouble before you eventually go to the right place. It ties the world together like that.

Of course, it's obnoxious once you know what you're doing, which is why I don't replay Fallout 1 as much as I do Fallout 2.

Just wanted to pop in and say I've always felt that F1's length was perfect for the amount of replayability. Its not too long to get burned out on, I honestly suggest replaying it later on you might appreciate its playtime even more. Fallout 2 is a good game, but it feels really bloated compared to how succinct the first one was.

Only 150 (250) days to find a chip, then you can fuck around as much as you like.
>>
>>388074823
IIUC, you have 150 days to return the water chip. You can add 100 days with a quest.
And then you have 500 days to kill the master and blow up the military base. And they changed that to 13 years in version 1.1.

Everyone said a low INT playthrough would be fun and lolxdsohilarious, so far every NPC has just been telling me to fuck off.

Also, is it worth getting powered armor to punch everything even harder?

Only way I found to get it last playthrough was repairing the suit in the BOS bunker, any other ways to get it, does it need training?

Why did anybody think restoring the content that got cut was a good idea anyway? Most of it wasn't even finished and some of it like the EPA didn't meet Fallout 2's already dubious standards. And the Hubologists and talking deathclaws did.

The more I play of the RP the lower my opinion of it goes.
>>
>>388079356
Getting it fix is easy, just sneak and steal the part, also higther int gives you more skill points and not having to fight the master is pretty sweet too.

No training is required.
>>
>>388079356
>Everyone said a low INT playthrough would be fun and lolxdsohilarious
It is, but if you want to actually get and do quests, you have to overdose on mentats from time to time so you can speak eloquently.
>>
>>388079356

>Everyone said a low INT playthrough would be fun and lolxdsohilarious, so far every NPC has just been telling me to fuck off.
Fallout one's retard playthrough is of varying quality. Most of the time people tell you to fuck off, but there's some Gems. You should put it on the backburner until you've done a regular play through though, it's not really fun to blindly stumble around until you get lucky.

>Also, is it worth getting powered armor to punch everything even harder?
Armor in the orginal Fallout's is a very linear thing. You find better armor you wear it. There's a tiny bit of room in the mid game, where great armor costs you some agility, but it's almost always the best to just wear whatever sounds best. So the answer is yes.

>blahblahblah
You'll get it when the time is right. Power armor in the original games is some serious shit. It basically trivializes anything that's not the final areas. Take my word on this, if you want any challenge at all you'll just be happy when you get it. If you go looking for it the game is basically over barring the credits.

You don't need any training or anything like that.
>>
How the fuck do I level up if the Deathclaws are dead? I'm level 12 now and not leveling at all anymore.

Yes. In the unpatched Fallout 2 unarmed weapons took half of the vat points on average, scaled almost 20% better than melee off your stats, benefited from any melee traits you took, and typically costed half the AP of an equal level melee weapon.

Add to that the New Reno Boxing circuit which, in practical terms, gives you a buff that makes you immune to every type of damage besides plasma and you have a broken as fuck skill.
>>
>>388077384
>14mm
Shit sux dick, thanks to its ammo mod it's always dealing 1/2 damage. The .223 pistol is ideal if you can't get the LE BB gun, since it doesn't have quite as high of an AP cost compared to the sniper rifle but uses the same decently powerful ammo.

That meme is literally a result of Fallout 3 fans attempting to align their favorite game in the series with Fallout 1 in terms of depth/seriousness and trying to totally devalue all of the good things about Fallout 2 by picking on its easter eggs.

You ever see those "I liked Fallout 1 and Fallout 3 the most, but I HATED Fallout 2 and New Vegas" people? It's them.

HD support.

For 2 the restoration mod is cool. However, as some have said the content isn't really up the standards of the rest of the game and the mod creators took some liberties with balancing changes.
>>
>>388081174
If you're talking about first time playthroughs you will absolutely be needing some unofficial patches and widescreen patches.

If you just mean mods for spice, Restoration Project for Fallout 2 is overall very good and there's the MIB88 Megamod for Fallout 2 which adds tons of garbage to the game that might interest you.
>>
>>388081174

Basically any other Big Gun is better than it. In Fallout 1 I go straight to the Rocket Launcher and use it for Decker's assassination missions in the Hub (rocket through the church window lol). Pretend you're female moot and set aliens on fire in Redding, they're either not resistant to it or take extra damage, I forget.

Because it comes from nowhere regardless of how you interacted with her so long as you were on good terms.

In the main-game she's very clear that you're just friends and the closest you can get to any flirting is her accidentally admitting she bangs chicks too if you play as one, besides that its all 100% platonic and the two of you are just great friends or tense partners. She never once hints at being into you, and in your only chance to hit on her she always shoots you down.

It comes up in no other endings either, its literally only the NCR one where there is ANY sign that she ever wanted to fool around with you at all.

The entire thing just feels like Avellone put it in because he knew NCR favouring players would be the majority, that most players would gravitate towards Cass as a companion because she's one of the first you can meet and is conventionally attractive, and that as a result plenty of people would see it - making it a great opportunity for him to shit on NCR fans AND people who wanted romanceable companions.

Its just fucking weird.

New Vegas still ranks above fallout 2 for me. When there is a big crowd, fighting in F2 just becomes a game about waiting for a long ass time.

Quests like guarding a caravan suck in F2.

Encountering have a a group of mutants, and having your one dozen allies help fight them makes it agonizing.

Each action takes five seconds. So you really only play every minute and a half.

I do hate new Vegas' game engine, but at least it doesn't bore me to hell by not letting me do anything.

Are there any mods for F2 to speed up the battle?

If there are, then F2 definitely tops my list.

In my words, a game engine is the set of mechanics and the way they are programmed.

Nv is a passable FPS with barely any RPG combat. It's a weird mix that gets neither perfectly. The only RPG elements are VATS and the DPS and Damage that weapons have.

Vats is what remains when stripping down things from F2 gameplay while taking away any movement.

I'm fine with the FPS style NV has, but I kind of preferred what I had in F2. Fallout isn't as fun as a pure FPS. It becomes more generic if dumbed down to a standard FPS.

>>388086286 #
That's hilarious.
>>
>>388086294
"romance" is p dumb in games where you say a few lines of dialogue and suddenly you're basically married ala Ass Effect, Fallout 4, etc.

Sexual encounters on the other hand like in Fallout 2 are totally fine. There's no "romance" in that game but plenty of sex going on.

Steal, Lockpick and Traps are all tragically underused skills because of how abusable they are through savescumming. Such a shame. They should have made it like how they did Speech in New Vegas where you would need to hit certain skill point breakpoint requirements to be able to steal items above a certain weight, or open certain strengths of doors/containers, or find/disarm certain strengths of traps. Obviously without the [Speech 59/70] thing though.

This would make these skills much more important to invest in and not just savescum over and over. Something almost like this exists with different strengths of doors/containers in Fallout 2 when it comes to lockpicking, and weights of items do matter when it comes to stealing, same for traps etc. but the problem is that even if you have a 5% of success you can eventually get that just by savescumming the shit out of it. And I don't feel bad about savescumming it when the fucking door in the Dunton's house in Klamath is retardedly hard to open for a few measly items. I deserve to be able to sell those shitty items and not have to have 150% lockpick to do it.

This. What the fuck was up with that door, when it's more secure than fucking military installations? I just started another playthrough recently and forgot about it so my lockpick was really low, and eventually I got so incensed I just threw a molotov at the door to be done with it.

I found 1 to be more frustrating than 2 in terms of balance and design. The official guide is excellent though, it allows you to choose the degree of spoilers you want for tips, it makes me think the game was designed around having to resort to a guide. For example, I would have never found out about the rope in the elevator thing in vault 15. In Fallout 2 however I was never lostm or in a dead endm but maybe because I learned what the game allows you to do from the first game.
I also didn't like how you are squishy and weak until you get the power armor, without which you can't engage mutants. In 2, even if you still need the power armor to fight the mutants and the Enclave, you could feel powerful in combat before it as the game is longer, with more armor choice and more fights to get loot from.
>>
>>388092675
Doesn't the broken floor of the elevator give you a message indicating that you can't get down without a rope or something like that if you click on it? I seem to recall that being a thing and I don't remember using a guide or a walkthrough for Fallout 1 on my first playthrough - and I definitely used the rope from Shady Sands there to get through Vault 15.
>>
>>388092951
this, im pretty sure it says "you cant get down there without a rope" and if you have a brain you remember you passed a town on the way to vault 15

maybe some people need big quest markers saying "buy rope from shady sands"
>>
>>388092951
>>388093075
I did not think of clicking on the elevator floor, I clicked around it but not directly inside. I played it last month so it was difficult to know what was scenery and what was clickable. I also admit that I am not very patient, older games are certainly punishing to impatient people

>Although to be fair, it took me THREE playthroughs of Fallout 2 to realise that shopkeepers have different inventories depending on what table/shelf/whatever you click on

WHAT THE FUUUUUUCK. i have always been tlaking to them to start barter, but can you initiate it by clicking on shelf?

You are playing an RPG. Why didn't you loot everything to see what happens?

ok, i would like to discuss ending of fallout 2.

why no one form enclave cared about big ass tnaker docking right ourside entrance to their HQ? and why no memeber of enclave cared about PC wandering through their base (which lead to destuction of the computer)?

did i miss something or ending is super-rushed?

Give me a better build. You literally can't.

Fuck off with your jinxed meme.
For jinxed to trigger, the enemy has to miss first. They don't miss on hard combat difficulty and rarely miss on medium.
Then, after they missed, there is only 50% chance for jinxed to trigger.
And only then something happens. Like they lose a turn. Or all their ammo in a magazine. Or some other useless shit.
Fast Shot + Turbo Plasma/Gauss Pistol is much better.

>One may also find a secondary pair of electronic lockpicks in the upper-levels of the Cathedral. Yet another set of electronic lockpicks can be found in a locked locker on the fourth floor of the Mariposa Military Base near the Lieutenant.

>>388100829
jinxed is useless near end-game. the enemies that are likely to miss are also likely to deal like 2-5 damage to you, max.

It's not just Vault 8, there's 1000 of those things just laying about, there's even a similar scenario where you help a midget dig for treasure only for the treasure to turn out to be now useless bottle caps.

Yep, most of them have different stuff on different shelves\tables. For example, bald leather armor trader in San Francisco has ammo and weapons on one table and armor on the other. Other SF trader has energy weapons and drugs on one and books\armor on the other. It's pretty essential to always check both actually
Also midget in tent in front of NCR has different shit on 3 shelves. So yeah
>>
>>388077023
It's a half finished piece of shit but it's still tiers higher than a fully finished 3 or 4.
>>
>>388101935
i mean, i were aware that they have different items, but i thought it was depending on the time, so i was mostly waiting. it sometimes worked and changed goods he offered and sometimes it didnt.

Just started Fallout 1, should I conserve my ammo and knife these rats to death for the EXP?

Nah, you'll find a better gun soon with different ammo type.

Isn't the best Jinxed 1 luck build unarmed or melee since those weapons can't critical miss?

I vaguely recall one time missing a punch so badly that I crippled myself. Not sure tho

It's ironic. There's no romance in New Vegas because he hates when it's there and poorly written, yet the game could have had some really well written romance if they actually felt like including it. The companions all have enough depth for it to be pulled off well. It'd definitely be better than in Fallout 4 where all you have to do is flirt with your companions and they'll gradually want to fuck you over time.
>>
>>388105223
What he actually said was that he hated forced romance, the kind that's there for the trophy ping or just there to make sure there's an even number of male and female romance options.
>>
>>388087961
bull fucking shit. why even say that? it's not even that interesting of a lie

Can you make a fun build in FO2 without meta knowledge? I did the ol' Small Guns/Speech/Lockpick and eventually Energy Weapons in 1 but I'd like to do something different for 2 if I CA . Also don't want to play as a retard for my first playthrough.

you can lower the AP cost of a super power fist attack to just 2 AP and have it crit all the time

With the right perks you have 12 AP to attack and 2 to move; roughly 14 AP to do actions with

It's OP as fuck. 6 attacks in a round each hitting for roughly 60-140 damage depending on the foe

In Klamath, Vic the trader's shack on a shelf in the back behind a door. A shitty pipe rifle that you need to reload after every shot but it is the very first small gun you can obtain.

Later you can get a 10mm pistol in the Klamath rat caves.

You can do "unarmed slut". Max charisma, dump perception. Tag Unarmed/Speech/Lockpicks. Spare yourself the headache of earlygame by actually being able to fight. Fuck everyone.

I was hoping to only spend ten bucks on some new games, so I was considering Fallout 1, 2, Sonic 2 and Sonic 3: Knuckles & Knuckles.

Can someone sell me on the first two fallouts?
