Do you guys even want another Half Life at this point?
Is there any chance Valve will release another Half Life in my lifetime?
>>
No.
No.
>>
>>388064417
>Do you guys even want another Half Life at this point?
Haven't for years. the last of the game devs are retiring out/have left Valve. There's nobody left with any attachment to the franchise anymore.
the only reason H3 would be desirable
is to give Ross Scott more material to work with
>>
I'd like to see it happen. I'd like to see Valve redeem themselves, because they really are as low as a developer can get at this point. Literally subsisting off a MOBA and microtransactions aside from Steam. And with a card game on the horizon. I would never have imagined Valve could be as low as they are today. Even Blizzard still makes real games.
>>
>>388064484
Well I guess I can go off myself now.
>>
>>388064417
Valve isn't working on another Half-Life. They might have been at one point, but have definitely dropped the project by now.

I'm not even sure if I'm personally interested in another Half-Life anymore, seems like the innovation of the franchise has been usurped in recent years.
>>
Its not happening. Ever. If the planets align and they somehow release it, it will be absolute garbage. I can't think of any game that's been in development (or "development") THAT long and still managed to preserve some kind of quality. That's not even accounting for the hype that it will have no chance of living up to.
>>
>>388064630
A part of me wishes that Steam will go under so Valve will be forced to make new games regularly.
>>
>>388064417
It's dead let it go.
>>
>>388064417
Valve should sell the franchise to Ubisoft
>>
>>388064623
Freeman's Mind 2 will end one day, and then we'll have nothing
This is a bigger tragedy than no Half-Life 3
>>
I've always wondered what would happen to the internet if they just -released- it. 0 dollars in advertising, no announcement, no build up, it just appears on the front page of steam.

Who knows. Maybe it would even cause developers to stop spending most of the fucking budget on advertising.
>>
They only needed some closure in some form.
A game or officially backed fangame, a book, a short film...
Anything, really. We're not expecting HL3 to be the epitome of some sort of new engine, or to revolutionize the industry anymore. We were left with a cliffhanger, that's it.
There is no way in the 9 hells of Alighieri that Source 2 and the franchise can best, in any way, what is already out there in UE4 and the games that have come out since Ep. 2

Just fucking end the story, ffs. I don't care how, just end it. This is LITERALLY like if Halo 3 never happened, despite however good or bad the story was compared to Halo 2 or ODST.

Maybe they could release a game set in the same universe that follows someone other than Freeman. MAYBE they could skirt around the hype that way.

>It's dead let it go.

I just finished replaying all the Half Lifes. I'll be depressed for the rest of the day at least.
>>
Do I want it? Sure. But I don't long for the next Half-Life iteration nor expect it.
>>
>>388064417

It's a dead franchise OP.

Also current day Valve is a lot different from 2007 Valve. Even if they did make a new Half-Life, it would be riddled with bugs and microtransactions.

I hope Valve never makes a new Half-Life, because I know it will be dogshit and ruin the series for me.

They're barely making games let alone Half-Life. Like >>388064630 said, I never would have imagined Valve being such a money-grubbing """developer""" after the games they made. It's honestly a shame since they always seemed to be the guys that everybody looked up to in terms of game quality. I can't even be mad at them anymore like I used to be. Now I'm just disappointed and pity them.

On an unrelated note, this makes me even more sad when I see Bungie going down a similar road, albeit in a more EA style.

>the duke nukem: forever of the 2010's
Only somewhat. Some people still actually wanted DN:F when it released; the HL community is like a family watching it's patriarch rot away slowly on life support. Some still rage against the inevitable, but most really just want to pull the plug and let the old man go in peace
>>
>>388065437
Not even close to DNF. There were screenshots of working prototypes of DNF that never were released.
The only thing we had of HL3 was concept art and ideas/words. Not even a sliver of gameplay.
This is worse than DNF. Far worse.

The only single player franchises Valve has is HL and Portal. Other than that they have always been a multiplayer game dev. Listening to /v/ you wouldn't think they were still running 3 of the most popular multiplayer games.

>>
>>388065949
Hell, I would be fine with a Half Life 3 multiplayer co-op with a fuckton of hats and microtransactions if they could at least wrap up the story.

It's just so sad to know that it'll never get the ending it deserves.
>>
>>388066187
I'll make the same vow with you, bud.

We better prepare for a long life.
>>
It won't ever be released. All the original team members have left Valve.

People are better off making their own mod to finiah the story.
>>
>>388066127
I'm aware of that. Source 2, that is, what DOTA2 uses, will never best UE4 for obvious reasons, so in a technical aspect, no one should expect any groundbreaking tech coming from a hypothetical HL3. So again, it's the closure to the story what is binding the community, not the gameplay.
Not anymore.
>>
No and no. Any Half Life game released at this point wouldn't be able to live up to the massive hype and expectations attached to it. It would be Duke Nukem Forever all over again.

In addition, every key player in Half Life's production eventually left Valve over the years and it's clear that the company as a whole has zero interest in releasing a "Half Life 3" in any form. There's no money to be made in a linear sub-10 hour singleplayer shooter whereas there's plenty to be made from Steam itself and ingame microtransactions.
>>
>>388066067
Fuck me, he's a funny guy. A semi-crazed US expat living in eastern europe with a cute and living off of beans like a fucking DayZ character is better than most of the paid writing staff at AAA studios. Ain't that a bitch?

We've set ourselves up for disappointment. Jesus himself would have to descend from the sky with a script in hand to save HL3.
>>

Valve doesn't want to make Half Life 3 because they don't have to make Half Life 3. Why spend money developing game when you can put out some new crates with skins made by your community? It's free money. You don't have to spend a dime, your community is happy to make content for you to take and sell right back to them.

Valve doesn't mind spending money. There have many scrapped games (way more than is public info) people who have left the company but still under nda talk about how far they got with projects they were told just to drop. From my understanding the company has weak leadership since Gaben doesn't do day to day stuff anymore and they are very erratic about what games they proceed with.

source was very hacky compared to modern streamlined engines like UE4 and Unity. One of the biggest things was updating the authoring tools all the modders use to make content. They also added Vulkan support for rendering and they have a new physics engine (Rubicon) and no longer use the Havok physics middleware.
>>

it'll be fucking shit becuase VR is still really far from being affordable

It feels like it needs to be finished, but I don't really care.

Is there any chance Valve will release another Half Life in my lifetime?
No real reason to. It would have to be perfect to not get shit on for teasing its fanbase for 10 years of blue balls.

I dont think it would make the money it would need when they just don't need that as an income source for what it would take to make.

But honestly I don't think HL3 would do well if its anything like the previous ones. Looking back in particular to HL1 having entered the series much later myself, its really the source of much of what sucks royal dick in shooters now.

It was novel and different in its time, but seriously go play the first hour or two of HL1 again. Its god damn boring.

Valve is near mythical. If you've paid attention to their interviews and such you'll hear of things like "Full-stop". They speak about it like a failed Portal 2 project with some kind of innovation. They seemed excited about it, even when Portal 2 had been completed, and they never spoke of it for plans to use in a future game.

What could it have been............... What futures?
>>
>>388071174
Like I said go play the first hour of HL1. It has more segments like that, but the initial start of the game is one of the most offensive.

It was different in its time, but its a straight line of shit to do and story elements and boredom because I guess they thought players too dumb to get the idea of a physics engine as if things hadn't been interactive in games before.

Then you go into the laboratory version of a sewer level with annoying ceiling shit suckers that feel leftover from the irritating designs of Diakatana.

It shovels exposition and plot at you, which is the issue with so many modern games. HL is more highbrow than the Michael Bay of modern ones sure, but its the same damn thing. I keep trying to go back to it, but by the time I have control over anything I just beat up all the scientist and go play something else.
