I'm having some trouble balancing status ailments, landing a lucky stun is rendering some difficult bosses into a cakewalk, and I don't want luck to play a very decisive role in the outcome of battles.

Clickteam Fusion? I don't recall using it before but I have experience with and older version (Multimedia Fusion 2) It was a pretty good engine and Fusion 2.5 seems similar enough. You can always try the free version to see if it fits your needs.

Mario and Maplestory do this, but Mario is less weird. Maplestory translates travelling north to travelling up on the map, which is very strange when you think about it.
I'm trying to have a world to fuck about in and having only left-right travel just doesn't quite work for that - branching paths (depicted on a top-down map) add a lot more options.

It'd be sort of like if every time you reached a crossroads at the end of an area, you'd be able to open a (modified for the game) level select (which you can look at anytime to make sure you know where you're going) - that's the best version of your idea I can think of.

Yeah, I don't think I can help with that. The only thing that comes to my mind is making an abstract left to right brancing "map tree" thing and throw away the concept of cardinal directions entirely, but it doesn't seem like that's what you're after either.

I have some photoshop experience and played around with RPG Maker back in the day, so I understand how some basic programming concepts work, but whenever I think of making the games I imagine, it gets a bit too overwhelming.
