Why is the word "souls like" bad when words like metroidvania is fine?
>>388043657
metroidvania isnt fine they are both annoying
>>388043657
Because "souls like" is misused ad infinitum, while "metroidvania" can't be misused that much due to what the word conveys.
An actual paragon would be using the word "roguelike" when the game is a fucking "roguelite"

>metroidvania is fine
t. ChozoVampire999
>>388043657
Metroidvania describe a very clear genre and characteristic
"The dark souls of" is just a stupid way to say you suck at the game while trying to appeal to fan of a popular game
>>388044052
>The dark souls of
Wrong thread?
>>388044052
>The dark souls of
The dark souls of=/=souls like
>>388044327
Nope
souls like = it has very much in common with the souls series
The dark souls of = Retarded headline made to inflate a games popularity
>>388043940
Does it really matter which word catches on?
Which word would you use? (if you had to)
>metroidvania
>literally only ever used to describe castlevania ripoffs
I dont know but /v/ is gonna tell us any minute now.
>>388045240
this, I can't think of one good metroidvania game
>>388043657
because this is the dark souls of thread responses
>>388045401Dark Souls
>>388043657
While both are pretty annoying, at least with metroidvania, metroid really did create it's own sun genre of game. What the fuck does souls like even mean? Is it the look? The combat? What about the souls game reinvents or creates a sub genre outside of what is obviously just an action rpg.
>>388043657
'Souls like' is a phrase.
'Metroidvania' is a word
Every alternative to Metroidvania I've seen people come up with has been completely awful.
>>388043657
Because
Same reason why is roguelike is fine
>>388045632
Dark Souls is a bad ripoff of Demon's Souls, which isn't a metroidvania
>>388043964
Underrated
>>388046101
Demon's Souls not being a Metroidvania has nothing to do with Dark Souls being a Metroidvania
>>388045758
Imagine if there were no castlevania games, what would the word be then?
Its like metroid, hmm.
>>388043657
souls like often means "lol you ded bro 2hard4u" while completly ignoring what make a souls game a good game.
metroidvania is much more concise in its definition.
>>388043657
both are cancer
Who cares. The Souls series doesn't even deserve that much accolade to get a descriptor or sub genre named after it. It has only two games worth a fuck in the franchise and that's Dark Souls and Bloodborne. The rest you can skip and aren't even remotely going to be considered classics many years from now.
>>388046849
Lets get another popular game which plays kind of like dark souls so we can combine the name into a genre name
>>388044052
You're just retarded, I'm being serious.
>>388047442
Soulsborne?
Metroidvania is used out of necessity because there is no other term for the genre. "Souls-like" just means a hard adventure game there's no need for it.
>>388047550
Same developer, doesn't count!
>>388043657
There's literally nothing wrong with either word when used correctly. Sure way to identify an extreme autist is that they complain about that.
Because Souls-Like IS Metroidvania
>>388043750
What ever happened to the word "sidescroller*
>>388047692
this
Metroidvania has Metroid in it and it's OK when Nintendo do it.
>>388047442
Soulsmaycry
Make it happen
>>388047692
>Progression is tied to normal ass keys instead of an ever expanding movelist.
nah
Basically it would be like calling fighting games "street fighter-likes." It wouldn't make any sense because the genre was not invented by street fighter. Hard action adventure games were similarly not invented by Dark Souls (or DeS). If the term "action adventure game" already exists why do you need to make up a new term to describe the same thing?
>>388048124
Action adventure is such a broad term though, even gta fall under that category.
What do you do if you want to find games like dark souls without looking through piles of unrelated garbage?
Say "games like dark souls?" Why do you need a special term?
The only time "Metroidvania" is acceptable is when you're talking about a Castlevania game that plays like Metroid.
