Investing money in a monitor is never really wasted because you can use it on your next build. Even if the 144hz isn't used you will probably still get a better quality picture just due to the overall quality of the display. If budget it a concern though then I personally wouldn't bother as you likely won't see enough difference to warrant the cost.

Hell, I was still gaming with a GTX 560ti 1GB up until literally yesterday, and it did the job just fine at 1080p/60fps. And no, I did not need to even set everything to Low just yet.

It has dealt with them just fine. Rising Storm 2 ran at steady sixties with mix of Medium and High settings, MGSV rock solid 60 with High-Very High combos, Talos Principle defaults to High-High-High presets... and so on.

Pretty damn good for an early 2011's build and card.

I have the same GPU and a 144hz screen. Games like Mad Max, Max Payne 3 easily make it over to 90-100 fps and difference is very noticable even then but of course most other games won't be as optimized or will be more demanding. Also keep in mind that I'm talking about fps on highest settings so once you get a taste of high refresh rate you may prioritise fps over graphics and turn settings down to medium/high.

I'd say it is entirely up to the amount of cash you have. If you have the money, sure buy it, you won't regret it and when you switch back to 60hz it will feel like your cursor is lagging/stuttering.

Yep, same here on a 980ti. Constantly hovering at ~120 out of 144. I do run it in borderless as opposed to exclusive fullscreen, but honestly I've even tried lowering settings and nothing helps.
