It's not all about graphical fidelity. Artistical merit must also be taken into account.

most people are poor so big gaming companies have to downgrade games so they run on shitty consoles and factory made PCs

like they have the studio and hardware to make high-end realistic games, but who are they going to market to?

Fixed. The five year cycle of consoles is the albatross around the video game industry's neck; and that's not going away until we lose this platform exclusivity bullshit. But that's not going away either, since even the film and television industries have bought into the fucking model.

It's not graphical quality that matters, it's visuals. Nier:Automata may not have the highest definition graphics but it's still fucking gorgeous to look at. Devs need to stop wanking over hd graphics and just make sure their games look good and run well. No-one's going to appreciate your HD hair simulation if it tanks the frame rate.
Take TF2 for example, it's not the prettiest of games but the visuals are clean and (hats not withstanding) it's a good-looking game. It also runs on toaster PCs.

Creating appealing, interesting art direction is more important than pushing graphical fidelity to its limits.
