FFXV is an open world where the "openness" is a facsimile. None of the shit you do in the world has any bearing on your progress, has no bearing on your understanding of the story, or of the world. There are faint glimpses of character development and some cute jokes and brand tie-ins. It's a half finished mess of a game with a barren open world.

Compare the openness of FFXII or FFV to XV. It's embarrassing.

Square only focuses on making ff look super shiny nowadays. Gameplay and Progression are just a afterthought.
Becouse of this it takes them 10 years now to make a mediocre and forgettable game.

But that's not true aside from 10. 1-9 all had overworld maps and you were free to explore all over the place and do a bunch of shit that was meant to be done later in the game earlier.

First area of the game has 4 towns you can go to immediately.

Sure your access to your car is limited from time to time, but you are not barred completely from the open world.

The world has a developed background and lore that enriches the experience the more you learn

1. Learn to read? Lore is lore in the end of the day.

2. That's still pretty good character progression. Plus your just cherry picking one bad part from an entire game. Vanille being the cause of Sazh's son turning into a l'cie, cid turning traitor, the Fal Cie wanting their own demise to summon the creator, these and more were pretty dam good plot points.

1. Lore being deep is one thing, it only appearing in the footnotes another. Rather then reading about the world i would have preffered to explore it myself. I guess its a matter of preverence but a "Show don't tell" approach would have been nice

2. Maybe i was just being turned of by the characters starting out as insufferable cunts.

If you enjoyed it, good for you. I just wanted to be done with at the 30 hour mark.

The written out lore is nice, and you do see it reflected as you play the game (setting and what have you).

Also, yeah they're pretty hateable at first, but turning to like em at the end is to me, a sign of some quality work there.
