They said Cheat Mode was mainly for people who played the games already and just wanted refresh themselves on the story before playing Volume 4. And it's completely optional. It's not the games were hard in the first place anyway. I literally can't remember dying a single time even when fighting enemies like 8 levels higher.

Hopefully the eventual IMOQ remaster will have a cheat mode that lets you skip Virus Core grinding. Would make that series 10 times better.

You'll miss some references if you don't play the original games but other than that GU kind of works as its own thing. A lot of stuff prior to the games happens in an anime though so you might want to check that out while waiting for the game to release.

Did I miss something? Usually the Japanese trailer came first, I don't remember seeing the Japanese version of this trailer. This looks like they just dubbed the Japanese trailer, which is surprising since they usually just subtitled the whole Japanese trailer for international trailer, like how they usually do with Tales trailer.

I played Infection and Mutation.

How does GU relate to it? Do old characters show up, or are old avatars with new players that behave differently?

Not sure what the problem with retry mode is. Saving your player from tedium is a good thing.

GU is mostly its own story with its own characters and can be understood with no prior knowledge of the series. Characters and concepts from previous games do show up, but knowing who Kite was, or who grew up to be who, is just a fun bonus more than anything.

Also, I could never get into the .hack games. I have Infection and have tried several times to get into it but it just feels so fucking tedious and boring to play. The concept is super strong though. Did they ever get better to play?

GU is much better to play. That's probably a big part of why they're remastering GU instead of IMOQ, because IMOQ's combat would need a complete overhaul to be acceptable in a modern release and GU just needs some touch-ups.
GU is more like a high-tension, high-emotion, character-driven shounen action anime though, losing a lot of the mystery and vague unsettling sensation of IMOQ, so your mileage may vary.

Hmm, maybe ill grab it then since its all in one place. I remember using .hack as an example of cross media story telling in one of my senior classes (ie: how the Matrix had movies, games, etc. and all told the story) .hack did the same by including the DVD's in the games. Again, neat ideas, I may have just needed to try GU

The original games had a fantastic story, but the gameplay was an acquired taste. It didn't help that they spread out across four games for the sake of charging more.

Ideally this does well in Japan and the west and they decide to remake the original games with improved gameplay. Or better yet, a new console game entirely.

Nah. With GU you can overcome the level barriers if you just got clever with your special attack usage. In particular even I think I remember beating the shit out of the final boss with either Rageki or the Awakenings even though my normal hits did like 1 damage and it could one shot me if I didn't guard.
