Time. Money. Not having enough of either. Not having enough bug fixers, not willing to hire outside talent, constantly looking at the bottom line. Pushing a release date like a hard fact. Pandering, or not pandering, listening too much or not listening too much.

People don't make games for themselves/their friends anymore. That died in America after the N64 gen, and elsewhere around the time of the PS3.

It was 2007. I think it was pretty underwhelming for its time. It was just a shooter, if it were an RPG I'd agree at the time melding the 2 usually resulted in a pretty subpar shooter, but bioshock came after a huge number of way better shooters. They removed pretty much all RPG elements from System Shock but left the combat from 1998 in place.

The original half life is a better shooter.

No Man's Sky started indie, got noticed, and wound up with a shitload of money. A lot of indie games have very small budgets, and wind up being small passion projects due to it. They're fun as shit for a few hours, then you're done.

No Man's Sky was a passion project that got a shitload of cash and a shitload of hype, and ultimately failed to deliver.

Are there really any truly sprawling Indie games out right now?

Uhhhh, fucking yes? Shovel Knight? Slime Rancher? Binding of Isaac? Hollow Knight? Cave Story? Hellooo? These are just only the most recent ones to boot.
>>
>>387967101
Nope. Hello games was a 4-man operation at least until 2013, when they made their first demo. Hello Games was a small, unknown studio at the time, and only about a dozen people were working on it until it's release. They received massive support from Sony after whatever E3 made them go viral.

>>387967221
Binding of Isaac has a lot of replay-ability due to being procedurally generated IIRC, and Cave Story wasn't my cup of tea. I didn't realize it was a long game, though.

Outside of Shovel Night, which helps me put what I dislike about modern indie into proper words, I haven't heard of any of those.

And what I'm getting at is I dislike the false sense of nostalgia associated with all of the "great" indie games. I don't dig the pseudo-retro style.

I guess my arguments are really more personal opinions, then. I want good games that utilize modern technology as opposed to games limited by cash, which results in "unique" or "retro" artstyles.
>>
Every assassins creed, if we discount story and count just setting.
They could literally take the engine and make literally any other game with it and it would be pretty swell game.

Anyone that acts like books as a whole are superior to the storytelling of literally anything else that supports storytelling is talking out of their ass. There are probably millions of books that are inferior to Fallout 1, and I can guarantee you right now that there's some autist in this thread that wants to tell me how his favorite RPG was better written than Fallout. You're most likely right about him. He'd probably drop Fallout after 5 minutes due to it being "clunky" or whatever.
