It's about high school students playing a killing game (students have to murder one another, but have to not be discovered doing it). Gameplay is similar to Ace Attorney, where there are point-and-click investigation sections, and then court-room sections afterward.

Well, the things that usually comes up are character development and pacing problems. And this kind of does show in the games somewhat.

Hollow Fragment has Heathcliff as the final boss even though he was already killed off in a flashback scene.

Lost Song had Seven as the final boss even though Sumaragi had more buildup as the antagonist

My only exposure to the anime was the abriged series.

In response to the actual question, SAO just has timeskips out the arse at first and pulled muh slow mo footage, strings music death scenes while also building a fucking harem like ffs.

The series as a whole is similar to .hack but with harem shenanigans. The games are pretty much ARPGs hack'n'slashes. They have a fair amount of customization as far as your weapons though Lost Song is a bit more limiting (although it's more open for the other characters which you can play as). The Hollow games allow you to use every weapon type (except the bow which is exclusive to Sinon).
