>immersive sim

What in the actual fuck is that even supposed to mean?
>>
>>387915758
>Immersive sims are primarily concerned with making players feel as though they are truly experiencing a believable world by creating mechanics that feel appropriate and logical within the game world and try to avoid feeling arbitrarily 'Gamey'.

>This school of game design was established by Looking Glass Studios with Thief, Underworld, and System Shock. The concept of immersive sims is still alive today in games such as BioShock, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and Dishonored.
>>
It should be noted that not all of these characteristics are necessarily required for games to fall into this category
>Immersion in an elaborate and believable game world.
>Simulation: physics and AI are used to create believable behavior in objects and characters which the player can freely interact with, resulting in 'emergent gameplay'.
>First-person perspective so as to truly look through the eyes of the protagonist.
>Game design that allows for multiple paths and/or multiple solutions in every situation.
>A systemic game world that keeps track of the player's actions, which can affect the "whole" game.
>open-ended/non-linear game design with an emphasis on choice and consequence.
>Full control over the player's character in every situation.
>A world with consistent rules that the player can interact with.
>Narrative that is not always forced on the player, but instead can be told through exploration and gameplay at that players will.
>No fail states, beyond player death.
>>
>>387915916
So literally every game is an 'immersive sim'?

Stop lumping DX with those stealth games. DX is an RPG. You talk a lot, you do quests, you make moral choices. It's not flipping Thief.
>>
>>387915631
I'm still so sad this game ended up the way it did. Human Revolution was really good, it had its fair share of problems but it was a shining fucking beacon in the dark shitfest that is modern AAA gaming. And then this games gives us a shit story, shit characters, even fewer hubs, and all the cool mysteries are just thrown in as sequel-bait. What a shame.

The pacing was fucked, the game wasn't short.

Mankind Divided is basically as if you took the original Deus Ex and made it end right before you came to Hong Kong, only that you stretched the game out to last as long.

It also doesn't help that DE:MD pretty much only had 1 hub (golem city was pretty tiny and mostly just a normal level with civvies in it).

Can most immersive sims really be considered RPGs, or are they just games with RPG elements?

Look at HR, the only character building elements are weapon upgrading and skill trees that will be 80%-90% full by endgame, ruining the idea of "builds". Is this really an RPG?

I think "immersive sims" died because the gameplay just isn't exciting. You just know every level has some way for your build to bypass it, making it feel pointless to level stuff up because at the end of the day every single build could've done it, just in a slightly different way. That and how absolutely trivial they are for anyone with the slighest exploratory drive.
>>
>>387920852

Immersive sims where never about the challenge. But the experience.
>>
>>387917419
Arkane's first game Arx Fatalis deserves a spot with the LGS titles and Deus Ex. But yeah, after that, nothing compares.
>>
>>387915429
Prey, DXMD and Dishonored 2 were all good games so technically yes they are back.
We will need to wait for their delayed success when people will see what they missed for stupid reasons or lack of good marketing for some on them.
>>

Risk of Rain. And yea it's a platformer but who cares. You can hack and slash, and the main skill/attack buttons are on the triggers for default

>You just know every level has some way for your build to bypass it, making it feel pointless to level stuff up because
More like making you explore to find a way around it. You're arguing in favor of linearity and you can fuck straight off.
>>
>>387921031
Excess supplies in any game with character building ruins the experience imo. I'm playing Prey and they clearly want you to build your character a certain way but I can just upgrade every single thing because it just keeps throwing shit at you and nothing warrants using the heavy stuff on because it's easy to cheese. Same thing with the modern Deus Exes, I had almost everything maxed halfway through.

It also kills any creativity since whenever things finally get difficult you can just vomit dozens of stacked up shit at the trouble until it dies and be ready for the next one.

Yeah I am really not to sure about that. Part of the reason I like Immersive sims is freedom to choose. Sometimes I want to platform around and jump up to high areas. Sometimes I want to simply hack, sometimes I want to sneak through vents, sometimes I want to go in guns blazing.

I mean I would not be against one Immersive Sim going for a heavier RPG approach. But it's a bit of a cocktease seeing a high ledge and knowing you can't get up there because you chose hacking 8 hours earlier at the beginning of the game when there was a locked door blocking something you thought was cool.

>copy paste dark souls
>move attack from trigger to x
>You're no longer a souls clone

Your definition is shit and you should feel ashamed

>Oh fuck a group of bad guys
>well I will just use my rocket launcher to take them out with one well placed shot
>holy fuck where did all my ammo go now I have like 4 bullets left for pistol
>fuck I better be able to negotiate or sneak my way around this next section now, and hopefully find ammo soon

Universal Ammo was not as bad as people say it was.
