I didn't know The Lost could take devil deals for free. I completed his post-it and unlocked Godhead without ever picking up a devil deal. Just fucking kill me.

I did. I didn't get it in HL either, not that it had abundance of rockets, nor many occasions to guide one, and you could easily finish the game without knowing it. But finishing HL2 with unguided rockets is a whole other dimension of frustration.

First playthrough, did not know that on second day all prices will jump up 10x, did not realize that turning down quests is a legitimate choice, ended up desperately struggling to survive and find the game unreasonably hard.
Second playthrough, just stockpile on day 1 before the price hike, then exploit the economy, also fuck quests like Angela's graveyard bullshit and con Lara out of the shelter money - swimming in dosh like a mad-man, never run thin out of resources - game is fucking easy.

In The Void by the same developer, I did not realize that you can literally cut down the amount of color you need to unlock hearts to HALF if you fill your own heart with Gold before you talk to Sisters on my first run.

These games like to fuck you up by hiding important mechanics away from you intentionally.

You know that a new version of the game with better translation was released about two years ago?
Pathologic Classic HD edition - it's on Steam and Gog (and torrents, of course). It's the same game but with minor improvements, new sytem compatibility, HD textures and new translation.

It's not great - they clearly cobbled it together rather hastily, but at least it's comprehensible and makes sense... well as much as Pathologic can make sense.

Also: They are right now working a complete remake of the game: new engine, completely new mechanics, all assets, most of the writing, quests, all done from scratch.
They even released a "prototype/proof of concept" called Marble Nest.
It's free for everyone on Steam: showcasing the new engine and visuals, as well as illustrating tone and story themes (it's a stand-alone story though).

It's like two hours long and absolutely glorious, though of course it's a not-even-alpha-build of the game, so rough as hell. You can't even save in it, you have to finish it in one sitting.

Still, it's like Pathologic extracted into two hours. Strongly recommend giving it a try since it's free.

I beat Diablo 2 countless times without realising you could use the maphack feature.

I later learned you were expected to program a robot to play the game for you. This robot would kill bosses and collect their drops on its own, saving you the trouble of actually clicking the screen.

I PVP'd for quite a while before realizing the easiest way to win was to kill my opponent while they were in town, checking their inventories.

I farmed bosses and cows for years when all I had to do was get another player to download survey.exe while ingame. They would simply drop their gear on the ground for me.

I was quite the newbie, if I may say so myself.
