I never got the love for IV. The characters are dull in both personality and gameplay, the story is retarded with the characters sacrificing themselves every 5 minutes just to be brought back later, and the soundtrack is lackluster compared to V and VI.
It seems like the epitome of a "good for its time" thing. I'm sure the characters and presentation were groundbreaking for its time, but all aspects were outdone by V, VI and tons of other JRPGs not only on the SNES but on many consoles following it.

While V's combat system is better, it's also 10x easier. IV is hard as tits due to ATB rather than turnbased, 5 party members to control instead of 4 and the increased difficulty for fights. Unless you played one of the dumbed down versions of course.

There's barely anything in common with the two stories since they have polar opposite tones and intentions. IV tries to tell a serious story while V takes the lighthearted route. But if you must compare, I don't understand how you can criticize Exdeath for being generic. Golbez is 5x as generic but at least Exdeath relishes in it and takes advantage of the game's ability to not take itself too seriously.
Not to mention Galuf is a better character than everybody in IV combined, all the way down to having a death that actually matters. Yeah sure Lenna and Faris are fairly forgettable but it's not like the IV characters are any better.

Granted I only played half of IV but that was mostly because the fights bored me out of my fucking mind. I cannot recall a single fight with any mechanics I had to pay attention to. I played the PSP version and if it turns out the only way to get any enjoyment out of the game is to play the DS port and artificially crank up the numbers on hard mode, then no thanks.
