It has plenty of plot connections to Trigger. And the combat system was unique and fun. The world design was also really good.

Honestly, the only flaw of the game is how Square rushed it to release before the story and characters were fully developed.

I never have a problem with the battle theme. Its better than a few other songs on the OST. But it can get repetitive if you hear only that on loop. Any song can.

I never liked Chrono Trigger so I was surprised how good this game was. Easily one of the best rpgs out there GOAT material.

The alternate world version of Leena joins you while the bitch in the home world who is your girlfriend just shrugs and says "okay, that's weird but whatever. See ya later."

This is the frustrating part. Like many characters in the game, Leena's potential story just goes nowhere. Probably because they ran out of time. I still wish they had given you an option to permanently leave Kid and replace her with Leena. Just have Kid show up in Fort Dragonia and get stabbed like an idiot (like she already does if you take that path). Then she follows evil Serge for the rest of the game (like she already does).

Kid is such a worthless character.

Well, Melchior appearing and explaining stuff to you works fine with the story. As does Chrono and co appearing, though that could have been handled well. The Epoch being built makes sense. Fun stuff like 'The Great Hero Toma' and the nation of Porre invading the islands work okay.

Schala being cloned and her original mind being uploaded into an alternate form of Mother Brain is kind of off the wall though. That's kind of where the story fell apart.

The events at the end of Chrono Cross fix that. They blame Serge for causing the calamity that allows Lavos to awaken, but it wasn't his fault. It was a misguided plan from Schala. Serge is 'reborn' in the alternate world and goes to defeat FATE. Thereby reversing the damage.

Basically, think of Chrono Cross as a massive side quest going on at the same time Chrono and co are traveling through time.

That's not true at all. However, you can look up an interview with Kato online where he explains that the third game that never got made would involve Serge and Kid saving Chrono etc and teaming up.

Currently replaying this game right now. By god, how did I ever have trouble with this game as a kid? All I did was upgrade my equipment from bone to iron and use the elements I found. And I'm destroying bosses in 2-3 turns.
