8 and 9 have plenty of similarities to 7 even if they have bunch of differences. I guess they're not quite as good, 7 is renowned for a reason but worth playing generally. the quality in 8 is bit frontloaded while 9 is actually fun for the whole game.
FF4 is also worth checking out, it's old, simple and rough but it's basically what popularized the style of JRPG with plenty of focus on big-dramatic storyline. especially the dramatic part.
it's cheesy but entertaining as hell. not sure which version I'd recommend, I know the PSP version had actually good spritework and the music was the best at the time. the DS version which was ported to PC I think is kinda weird but not bad, but the new 3D graphics aren't as appealing as good 2D, already weird designs stand out even more with them, and the story and dialogue is frankly so cheesy I'm not sure voice acting was an improvement even if it's not bad.

in a nutshell, play 4 on PSP or vita if you have one, consider your options if you have to do it elsewhere. Stick away from the PS1 version though.

This month we got legend jobs based on Squall and Zidane, so they come with their weapons from the game. I don't think there are any 8 or 9 themed cards right now, there were some with the Dissidia collab event many months ago but those are long gone.

If you have the patience of a saint you could start an account this month and reroll until you get the Squall or Zidane job, but I wouldn't recommend that since you'd get burnt out on the game before you even started playing it.

The games aren't really connected except for some stuff that you see in each game; Moogles, Chocobos, a character named Cid, etc... so you can play them in whatever order you want.
Also I've heard most people don't really like 1, or some of the earlier games. Again I haven't played them so I can't comment on them personally.

If you want a different game I recommend skipping FF8 for now, it is too much like a worse and more tedious version of 7 and you'll just be let down at every turn. Play 6, 9 or 10 instead.

And unless you are a casual, stay away from all the ports and remakes. They're generally all far inferior to the originals. Emulate the original SNES, PS1 and PS2 versions of those games respectively.

Honestly it's a good trilogy OP. World aesthetic is great, combat is fine, but "acting" is a little on the corny animu side. The people who cry about linearity have do kind of have a point though, on the delicate teeter totter of linearity vs open world, the first game is more on the linear side for much of the first half. First half of the game is like a really long tutorial. Last half though is great, 13-2 is basically a time traveling choose your own adventure book, and Lightning Returns (while too much on the open world side of the teeter totter for my tastes) has a great combat system and is a great conclusion to the trilogy.

Besides this, 8 and 9 are tied for my favorite, which I guess makes me look like a contrarian faggot, but they're also solid stories.
