The demons of hell couldn't kill Doom Guy, his skin is impenetrable. Putting him into a coma was a hail mary and the only way they could stop him. This is all explained in the game.

They had to trap and curse the Doom Slayer, sacrificing who knows how many powerful demons required to be a tasty enough bait for the man, because he has a nasty habit of going from 0 to RIP 'N' TEAR with minimal room to work with.

At the moment of his capture he was plenty powerful enough to shred an army, plus he had his sword with him at time of entombment. It was only after he was dug up and seperated from the sword and armor did he become remotely vulnerable.
