Beat Megaman 1-5 this weekend. Working my way through the entire franchise.
Let's have a Megaman thread.

>>
>>387816337
Come on please?
>>
>>387815721
6 is still easy, after 7 the franchise will change on difficulty, specifically with Megaman & Bass and 10.
7, 8 and 9 have some parts but over all they aren't that hard, I recommend Buster only for more fun.
>>
>>387815721
Favourite so far?
Mine is 3.
>>
Megaman 1-6, Megaman X1-3 and Megaman Zero 1-4 are the only must-plays. Everything else ranges from simply okay to shit.

With all due respect, I dunno how anyone can say MM3. It falls apart halfway through and a lot of things feel rushed.
Personally I think MM4 is the best of the NES games.
>>
>>387817808
Put 1 and 6 in contrarian and MM&B and 10 in patrician
>>
>>387817837
I'm aware of it being lackluster towards the end and it's mostly nostalgia for me, I guess, but it feels like the first "complete" Megaman game, and even as kind of an ending to the original story in a way.

Out of all the classic Megaman games though, my favourite is easily Megaman 7. I'm really more of an X guy.
>>
>>387817808
>7
It looks okay and has good music, and the weapons affecting the stages is cool. That's about it.
>>

They're getting easier as they go along. It's probably because I'm just getting better. Looking forward to seeing how 9 and 10 differ considering when they were made.

>>387817404
Probably 4. I think 3 was better than 1 and 2 though.

>>387817557
That's fine but I'm playing them all chronologically.
Megaman -> X -> Megaman Zero -> ZX -> Legends

>>387817808
1 is a bad game. I'm sure it was great for the time but it's a bad game. The others have aged surprisingly well, especially 3 4 and 5, but 1 just feels malicious in its design. It revels in wasting your time for no reason. Also Flameman can eat my ass. I still don't understand how to dodge his attacks after beating him a good 4 or so times.

Has anyone gotten the MegaMan Legacy collection 2? How much is it and is it worth it?
I haven't really played 7 or 8 but 9 is one of my favorite ones. 10 is ok, not as good as 9 but just a little mediocre
>>
>>387818392
its only really worth it for 9 and 10 and for the moment it's too expensive for that.

also fuck off 10 is great
>>
>>387818392

Just do it, you will love them.
>>
>>387815721
I played through them last year and holy fucking shit, I think I was a better gamer when I was a kid.
Those games are fucking hard, I thinking all these 'cinematic experiences' from games has softened me up.

Since then I've been playing through all the old Sega games, fun but frustrating times.

>>
>>387818458
Are 9 and 10 as good as the nes games? I've been ignoring them for years
>>
>>387818254
He would have. That's how I did that section. You need to land on the one that knocked him into the spikes then just jump up there normally. Saves you the risk of landing on the spikes if you do it right.

>>387818392
I've been playing them via Legacy Collection 1 and I think it's great. Haven't touched the extra content like challenges but the games themselves are very faithful, right down to the NES slowdown when more than half an enemy is on screen. I assume Legacy 2 is just as good and that's why I'm downloading it while typing this.

>>387818575
>Save states

Don't be weak. You're right about that though. It feels gross compared to the others. Megaman slides a pixel forward every time you try to stop, the levels are designed around wasting your time with things like ceiling mounted robots that can be sniped with no threat but take forever to kill, and they're in the hallway to the boss. It's the only game in the series that has aged poorly. Maybe 2 a little, but not nearly as much.

Mega Man 3 has the best OST

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEf8gPFFZ58
>>
Why does Megaman have such luck with redesigns? X is a redesign and instead of being hated like most it's loved universally. The battle network games should be insulting to most people but they seem pretty popular. Meanwhile you give sonic a bandage on his arm and everyone memes it for years.
>>
>>387818778
9 is a masterpiece and almost as good as 2, 10 is really good too but it's more in the middle
>>
>>387819076
The hate is mostly because they aren't 8bit like the rest, and each game their own problems
7
>sprites are bigger than they should be
>buster got weaker
>weapons aren't that good
>wily capsule, one of the hardest of the series
8
>weapons have the same problem, except you are forced to use them on specific levels
>voices
>Frostman's stage and Wily 1
If there's anything I love from 7 and 8, is the music, especially 8 with Electrical Communication.
>>
>>387819089
but 8 is a genuinely terrible game. if you disagree you must have nostalgia for it like a gay retard would.
>>
>>387819076
no, only the elitist ones hates 7 and 8
>>
Why do Mega Man 9 OST sucks so much guys?
>>
>>387819316
I don't really care about it being 8bit. I hate forced use of weapons though. The buster should always be at least able to scratch a boss, at least with a charge shot. Weapons should be for creative use to get through difficult situations.
>Wily capsule, one of the hardest of the series
fug
>>
>>387819372
it has nothing to do with elitism, they're awful. 8 especially has the worst sounds and music of any megaman game ever. as if that wasn't bad enough the bosses are extremely piss-easy. just admit it sucks.

7 isn't as bad but it's still very meh. the only good things about both really is that they look real nice.
>>
>>387819495

Yellow Devil repeats his pattern, and he's not a problem unless you go with buster, Elecman's weapon make him look like a joke.
>>
>>387815721
I replayed much of the franchise on a stream last year. Got through MM1-MM8 and MM&B, and X1-X5 I was too shit to beat X6 back then but I'm able to now. I also did Xtreme 1 and 2 even though they were redundant. My favorite of the Classic series is MM6 because I grew up with it. Kinda bums me out to see a lot of people putting it lower on their lists. And my favorite X game is X4 even if it is too easy, Zero is just really fun

>>387819076
7 has a few annoying levels (I recall disliking Turbo Man's stage for some reason) and the Wily Capsule boss is unforgivingly difficult. This'll sound pretty vague but I just don't really like the "feel" of it either. I actually like 8 a bit more, but a lot of the stages are very gimmicky so that can be hit or miss.
>>
>>387819934

>>387820109

The fire that comes up and down is bad, I think they did a lot of damage or could kill you instantly, the big truck before fighting Turboman is a bit better.

Marathoning them all in order like this has been the most fun I've had in a very, very long time. If you're up for it I recommend it. If not then 4 is my favorite so far, 5 is almost as good. 2 is overrated. The levels are really good but the robot masters are piss easy since they made their weaknesses way too effectual. During the boss rush you can literally one shot metal man with his own weapon.

>>387820109
How'd you enjoy doing it and how long did it take you? I'm actually pretty worried about the X games. I've only ever beat Sigma in 4 and 7

The Wily Tower variant is such a pain in the dick. Shit moves fast and you've got to constantly move back and jump forward or else you'll run out of screen and die trying to make new jumps.

>>387820376
Playing the game on hard makes the bosses a bit less weak to their weaknesses and the buster, it also makes item drops more rare.

Right, forgot that was an option. Honestly kind of regret not picking it but I wasn't sure about the changes. So far 4 has probably been the easiest followed by 2. 4 was only easier because it gave you a hilarious amount of E-tanks. At one point I had I think 6 of them.

>>
>>387821367
MM8 just doesn't click for me. I find it too boring and the presentation is utter wank. MM7 has some neat things but Megaman's controls feel completely off to the point that I can't enjoy it. The bigger sprites don't help either. Atleast it got crazy good music.
>>
>>387820376
It was pretty fun. I remember starting it at the beginning of December and wanting to finish before Christmas, so I was doing it for 2 or 3 weeks. One game per day.

>>387820953
One of the games, I forget which but I wanna say MM5, had a surprisingly high drop rate for extra lives. Either that or I got really lucky on my playthrough.

>One game per day

Sounds about right. If you do them at a decent pace you can do one in an afternoon. Get faster as you get better. Ya it's 5 with a really high life drop rate. 4 has a pretty high drop rate on everything but health too. Playing them all in succession has given me this feeling they can't quite figure out how they want to tweak things like drops and weaknesses. Weaknesses are nearly useless on most of the bosses in 4 and 5 while they make 1 and 2 into a joke. Every item's drop rate is changing wildly between games, especially lives and E-tanks. I'm glad they switched to the refillable E-tanks later on. Having 6 for the Wiley stages makes you feel like a cheater.

>>
>>387822519
I have 9 and 10 on my Wii.
>>
>>387822394
Depends on how legal you want to go, because Anniversary Collection also has the two arcade games, but certain versions have input delay on MM8 along with some real terrible soundmixing for it on all versions. Legacy isn't inherently better than Anniversary and lacks the fancy Navi Mode shit (inconsistent though it is, especially with the music swaps from the arcade games that occasionally don't match a level whatsoever), but it has the most accessible means of getting 9 and 10 legally.

Really comes down to how much you want to spend, what you're looking for, and what systems you're going with.

>>
>>387822115
X4 is linear as fuck and the game is too easy, but goddamn if it isn't fun. Plus getting to play as Zero for the entire game and him getting his own unique moves is really fucking awesome. That and Magma Dragoon is one of the best bosses in the series.

>>387822150
I think a lot of the reason people shit on MM64 is because of the N64 version. I had the playstation version as a kid and it was pretty damn playable back then and both games were still a ton of fun when I emulated them later.

Fuck the license shit in MML2 though, who thought that would be a good idea.
>>
>>387823181
>Fuck the license shit in MML2 though, who thought that would be a good idea.
Isn't that entirely optional for if you want to go into the extra dungeons?
>>
>>387823271
Yes, but you miss out on some side arms if you don't clear out at least one S class dungeon. I don't even think it's possible to get the S class liscense without exploiting that glitch that makes mega man shoot faster.

Still, beyond that and the under water mine the games are both great and highly recommendable. At least the PS1 versions are.
>>
>>387822938
Nope, only buster.
>>
100%ing Legends is just a matter of doing the license dungeons and getting all the side arms right? Shouldn't be too much harder than a normal playthrough?
>>
>>387824063
The license part is probably the hardest.
>>
>>387824162
I remember most are pretty easy except I think the last 2, can't remember which of the games that was though. There's a timer or something right? It's been a long time.
>>
>>387820189
does that still work in the new remaster?
>>
>>387824063
Legends 1 doesn't have license tests, they're just part of the story progression. 2 has them, and also has these two items you can't get if you're too good or too evil (the lady on the tropical island that gives you that bullshit test has one, and that one random Muslim in that desert boss fight room trades you the other one).

Beyond that nah, they're fairly easy games. You will need to grind for money if you want to upgrade some things, I know the cash needed for all the shining lazer upgrades in MML1 is like the same amount of cash needed to upgrade every other gun in the game.
>>

I've played Legends 2 I think 3 or so times and I didn't even know there was a system like that. The quiz lady gives you the pencil I remember, what does the Muslim dude give you? I actually thought the pencil was a joke item. How do I avoid not being able to get them?

What's your opinion on Megaman Maverick Hunter X?
>>
>>387824910

>>
>>387824673
There's a hidden morality system in both Legends games, your armor gets a lighter shade of blue when your good and darker when you're bad. I think the test lady has multiple tests to take? I think you need to pass the hardest one to get the one of the items needed to make the Z saber. The Muslim guy gives you a grenade which turns into that thrown bomb that leaves and explosion that does an AoE damage for a short while.

To get the grenade you need to trade something (pretty sure it's something you find on a dig fairly early on, like a fossil) to the guy in the junk shop in the snow area, you can go behind his store to talk directly to him. After that you need to talk to the muslim with bad karma to get his item, but you need good karma to even be able to take the test from the lady on the tropical island. So you should take the test first and then corner a pig and juggle kick it like 80 times.

I'm pretty sure everything else is much easier to get, but goddamn do those two items get hyper cryptic.

Never played 8, just grab megaman legacy.
Why is it shit?
>>
>>387819264
Some people did shit on Battle Network and even Legends originally because "they were nothing like the classic games I grew up with!" but people that actually played the games knew how good they were (well most of them) despite the change.
>>
>>387819527
The forced use of weapons in 8 is more on stages rather than bosses, all bosses can be beaten without the use of special weapons.
Personally I like that you have to use the weapons in stages, makes things more interesting imo.
>>
>>387825526
Which is why I said some parts were hard in 7,
8 and 9 (Slashman with buster only is also annoying)
8 had the slide parts from Frostman and Wily 1, and 9 had some gimmicky levels, bosses aren't that much except buster only Plugman and those floating slimes.
>>
>>387825823
Squishy Mega Man, the level design has some neat gimmicks but it's fairly subdued or at times just meh, and the bosses aren't a whole lot to write home about besides "look at our new hardware capabilities" and terrible dubbing.

Plus while the music has a few standouts, it feels like it's really holding itself back despite being a Mega Man game. Like, not a lot of oomph.

>you need to kick a pig until a muslim gives you a bomb
I didn' know Raimi worked at Capcom
>>
>>387825834
It was hip to shit on Mega Man Legends for a while (Super Bunny Hop did a shit video on it, and AVGN also said the game was bad in a video) so a lot of people that never even played it started memeing this opinion to shit on the PS1. Gex kind of got the same shit, with people saying he's on par with Bubsy when the 3D Gex games were alright games.

Battle Network is too niche though, and most people that know about it are fans anyways.

>>
>>387819264

It probably helps that most of the redesigns in Mega Man are completely different individuals instead of just a new design. X isn't Mega Man, the Net Navis aren't the Robot Masters, etc.

That's probably why MMZ got the most flak, because it's supposed to be the exact same Zero from the X series.
>>
>>387826804

Emulators also have input lag, right? Or are there some who don't?
>>
>>387827293
You can try with any.
>>
>>387827293
depends on your setup, the emulator, the game, and so forth
people have been emulating MM games for ages and i've never seen anyone bitch about input lag, and all the ones people usually emulate are on old enough systems that you must have an ancient toaster to have problems with them

>>
>>387825848
I don't like it being completely forced, but making things a lot easier is perfectly fine. Like the start of the Wiley stages in 1 has a bunch of those jumping guys you need to run under. I'm doing the same thing, though I'm being autistic and felt the need to play through every fucking game that's not a mobile game or port.

I've gotten through a majority of Classic, just finished The Wily Wars and Soccer. Gonna play the Game Gear game next before finally moving onto Legacy Collection 2.

My favorite so far is either Mega Man V or Mega Man 6. The worst one by far is Mega Man 3: The Robots are Revolting, which might take the mantle of the worst game I've ever played. It and the first DOS are the only two I wasn't able to bring myself to finish, an hour of them was more than enough.
>>
>>387830912
I might play the spin offs like you're doing. Haven't decided yet. It will probably be after I do the full timeline though. How have they been so far? I'd hope stuff like the soccer game are somewhat short.
>>
>>387829358
I'm assuming you mean the one featured in all the various media in the game's world like the posters in shops or on the tv set in the bar?

Volnutt is only called megaman/rockman because when he was first found the Roll in that series insisted on naming him after her "favorite video game character"
>>
>>387831094
Soccer is exactly what you expect. A really mediocre Soccer game that suffers from some awkward controls and a poor field of view. Its got power shots like the Mario Sports games to spice things up but they're so unbalanced they're basically free goals. If you bother with it Id just quickly play through the Capcom Championship, shouldn't take too much of your day.

The Wily Wars is a mixed bag. The Wily Tower mode is legitimately cool and interesting, letting you bring in any 8 weapons from 1, 2 or 3 to take out three new robot masters. Unfortunately it's locked behind remakes of 1-3 that aren't that great, though you could always use a cheat code to bypass that. Id recommend the Japanese version so you don't have to deal with the European slowdown.

None of the licensed games besides Rockman & Forte for the Wonderswan are worth mentioning. Same goes for Super Rockman Adventure
>>
>>387831559
Wait what? I thought that it was Rock from the original series essentially locked away for thousands of years through the events of X, Megaman Zero, and ZX? Come to think of it I never really considered the whole Volnutt thing. Man that ruins it a bit for me. It's been years since I played them and since I played them before any other game the story has been foggy for me. I always thought the last human, "The Creator" or whatever they called him was Wiley. That's a shame.

Best guess is the moniker of megaman/rockman was something the carbons found out about, either from deciphering ruins or having an otherworldly encounters with an ancient and overhearing the term. Either way they probably wouldn't have had a good grasp of what it meant so that created a lot of mystery and possible skepticism which could result in it being treated as a myth or urban legend which in turn made it really interesting and good reference material for artistic creators to turn into a multi-media franchise that coincidentally is completely identical to something that happened over 3000 years ago...or we could just say it was a plot hole that came about because the creators hadn't thought about tying the series into the main canon at that point and just wanted to add lots of cameos

9 was Inafune's idea. It sold well so they rushed out another sequel. 10 didn't sell sell so they didn't make another. Mega Man was in a phase where they didn't really know where the series was going anyways. The main games were on the NDS and they weren't selling. So they stopped making more. And Inafune left so he couldn't push for more games.

I can't think of a single Megaman series I don't enjoy. I'd imagine most people here would say the same.

Well said, friend. Currently trying to 100% Mega Man Star Force 3 right now.

Which series was that? Battle Network? I thought those stopped with the end of the GBA. As far as series direction goes, I'm still surprised they never made a Metroid Prime clone. That was when FPS were all that were coming out and you have an iconic mascot with a gun for an arm.

Main series were Starforce and ZX at the time, the formal more so than the latter

The NDS games were "ZX" and "ZX Advent". Both bombs.

>FPS

There were some ideas about a western made Mega Man Reboot. For myself, I think a third person X game could work well.

I hear about that rarely but I've never actually thought to look into it at all. I have no idea what the series even is. I actually thought ZX was GBA as well.
