I once had imagined Jolly Roger Bay as a Sonic level where you run across the water, platform on top of pirate ships, and discover hidden caves underwate that lead to alternate pathways. I thought it'd be pretty cool.

That sounds rad. I think the major thing 3d sonic games have been missing is a good movement system. Speed is fine but breaks the flow of the game when you have to stop. lost world almost got it right in that regard, if it weren't for those tube levels.

Pretty sure Nintendo and Sega couldn't agree. The levels were either too Mario or too Sonic. And based on how Mario + Rabbids came to be Miyamoto isn't interested in any genre that's already been done. So platformers.

Between USA's Super Mario Bros. 2, which was the first game to design Mario as we know him today and Sunshine, the only difference was making Mario slightly taller and slightly less fat. That was a course of about 14 years, so now, 15 years later, I don't see Mario's design changing outside of maybe experimenting with different art styles.
