This is the only one that was right, Sakamoto (at the time) couldn't find a team that could make the game so it got put on hold. Other M was supposed to be one but Team Ninja gonna Team Ninja (not that they are fully responsible for the game but I wanted a 2D game). Prime is a different franchise to Nintendo so it being a success or failing would have zero effect on the mainline games.

The problem is, they still don't sell particularly well. Zero Mission is a fantastic game but only moved 800k units on one of the best selling handhelds of all time, that's not a very good incentive for Nintendo to keep pouring resources into the franchise. The fact that part of Samus Returns is being outsourced to MercurySteam of all people is indication of that.

Zero Mission didn't have a high budget and only cost $29.99 in stores at release. 800K or 500K the game made a profit and that all that matters on a GBA game. So unless the game sells under 100K I don't really see less than a million putting a dent on the 2D franchise.

Nintendo also seem to cater heavily to their Japanese audience and the Switch is a good example of that seeing as home consoles are rapidly dying in Japan so making it a pseudo hand held is a good move for the Japanese audience and Metroid always bombs in Japan.
