I loved Dark Souls 2 and happily did SotFS. Felt a bit like Master Quest from Zelda OoT, or Hurricane Pack for Ninja Gaiden.

I like the idea of Metro 2033 rather than the execution.

Standardization of hardware and engines.

OoT is a custom engine written for custom hardware. Odds are they had a dedicated thread running for inputs.

I don't know what would hinder modern devs other than the engine they use. I get the impression the stock engines like Unreal or whatever just come prepackaged with standard functional communication to the hardware and afford the devs more time to create systems and art without working about writing out how to communicate with the machine the game is running on.

De-coupling that sort of stuff is common in a lot of games and is kinda a sensible thing.

Some indie games don't care. Guaccamelee I remember played super fast because they didn't decouple. Had to fiddle in the options to stop it running higher than intended.

Maybe this was magic in the N64 days because honestly for me most or that shit boggles my mind. Everyone was limited by tech back in the day.

But imagine two programs. One handles all the shit happening in the game and updates as fast as possible.

The other grabs a copy of what everything looks like, draws it as fast as possible on the screen, then grabs the copy.

The one drawing is significantly more work, and slower than the one doing everything else.

If you ever heard of Vsync on PC games? Essentially that determines if while the drawing program is drawing, if what it is drawing is allowed to changed mid-draw or not.

They were all kinda flawed but still fun, and heading down the wrong direction with each new release until NEVER EVER territory.
All they had to do was get Fable 1's style of magic again with Fable 2's type of player morph traits, mix that in with the same quirky feel to the world and it would've been golden. Instead we get dreadful magic gauntlets, some random shadow thing and a cluster fuck of a weapon system.

I mean Zelda as in within the same sort of tier for them. Like how Halo would be Microsoft's Mario. I always felt Microsoft has some good strong IPs but they have completely mishandled just about all of them. So now their games just look awful because of how they handled them.

I do agree with you that they have some obvious glaring flaws but they were just so fun and comfy to play. I actually didn't mind Fable 2's magic system even though 1 was better with this. The biggest issue with these games was they were way too easy. In 2 you can't even die which is a little too ridiculous. The final boss for 2 also sucked. Still though I really like a lot of what these games did. The literal black/white, good/evil morality system was great for such games to.

Maybe one day a good spiritual successor to this franchise can come. Maybe one day...

Its more hands off with how it teaches you (or used to teach you with the small tutorial in Story mode.) Before August 1, the game made you have to learn on your own and from other players who had learned more about how to play the game and survive longer which really helped the word getting spread about it.

Sometimes I still find out about stuff that I never knew before, like that frozen deer bodies that can't be harvested by hand can be warmed up by a fire which will then let them be harvested by hand. I also really like its art style and soundtrack, plus the voice actors for the male and female survivors voice male/female Commandard Shepard.

And its already confirmed to be getting a movie from the Resident Evil movie director, which kinda sounds bad.

The 360 admittedly looks not so great compared to next gen or PC (obviously), but the stretched that shit to the limits. My roommate got it when it came out on PS3 and I sure as fuck wasn't complaining about it being ugly. I got it soon after for my 360 and I would venture to say that the online play was more rough and real, you know, before everyone figured out the optimum way to do everything.

Huge RE4 fan here. Fundamentally nothing but you miss out on how Leon knows Krauser and Ada. Other than that it's far removed from anything else in the series. There is one scene where they talk about Wesker, but Leon never even met Wesker in person. You miss nothing. The saddest thing about playing RE4 is that you're playing the end of a series first, since nothing after the Gamecube version is canon. This includes the PS2/Wii versions, and the Wii Chronicle games.
