Ocarina of Time has held up pretty well graphically. Theres something about its art style that looks good. Anyone else agree?
>>
>>387737513
it's definitely old but i don't think it looks dated
>>
>>387737689
it is certainly old and dated. Top-notch for it's time though, and for the following few years which is actually the best any game can hope for.
>>
Despite knowing that deus ex probably looks worse than ocarina, I think that its graphics hold up better than ocarina today.
>>
>>387737513
It aged like milk just like the rest of N64s games. A game that still holds up well is Wind Waker.
>>
absolutely not
>>
>>387737513
I know you're joking. But I like graphics as long as I can tell what I'm looking
>>
>>387737513
yeah but I also just love low poly aesthetics in general
>>
Working effectively with what you have at your disposal is always superior to chasing something you can't achieve. Modern devs don't understand this.
>>

8th post, best post
>>
>>387738315
Working effectively with what you have at your disposal is what devs today do you vague hipster
>>
>>387737513
nintendo have always been good at designing styles that look good for a long time
the severe limitations of that gen mean that most of the games still look dated, but they don't look too bad all things considered
>>
>>387737513
There's N64 games that hold up graphically, OoT is not one of them
>>
>>387737513
A strong art style can make up for graphical faults. So while Ocarina obviously looks old, it's still pleasing to the eye.
>>
>>387738853
pleasing to those who played it when it came out
>>
>>387737513
No it's just nostalgiafag goggles.
>>
>>387737689
How can you argue it doesn't look dated? if it came out today it would be laughed at for its visuals and low poly.

Dated doesn't mean bad, it just means dated. It was good for it's time, but we've advanced. You can tell what time period it was made in, thus it's dated.
>>
>>387738073
>wind waker
in terms of visuals, sure. but not in terms of gameplay. sailing is fuck-boring. changing the wing is even worse, considering you have to do it about 300 times in a playthrough for every item and island.
>>
>>387739115
dated does means it looks so old that it's bad, old just means it's a product of a different time and it has it's limitations.
>>
OOT's world design in general is pretty fantastic

you mean the fact that it has a color palette?

It's wildly inoffensive artwork. I mean yeah its a low-poly desert and the colors are pretty dim compared to what you'd see today but its pretty low-key overall. To say it "holds up" is a bit of a stretch, though for the time it looked good. It does the trick is what I'm trying to say.

Something like pic related came out the same year and the artistry really stands out. It's all low-poly but the masterful use of color in the environment is timeless. Even as rendering techniques get more and more advanced, this image still *pops* and intrigues the viewer.
>>
>>387739443
No, dated literally means you can tell what era it's from by what it looks like, you fucking mongoloid. Never has the word "dated" ever explicitly meant "bad"
>>
>>387737513
I feel as though the distinction between realistic and cartoonish graphics was blurrier and less well defined on the N64 and other platforms with those kinds of specs, and it's kind of a shame there's such a stark difference now.
Not that there's anything wrong with very realistic or cartoonish games, it's just rare to see something sort of in-between like this now that doesn't look like shit.

Anyway, it doesn't bother me how Ocarina looks except for the hideous RE-style backgrounds used for some areas like castle town and some interiors, but I'm used to it and have a high tolerance for older, more primitive graphics in general. And those backgrounds probably looked better when played with the intended resolution/kind of TV/etc. anyway.

Nigga that looks worse, are you on crack

That damn pond was so cool 17 years ago.

Was like finding King Tut

>here's a game with no textures and basic polygons

Spyro was actually the shit, but come on.
>>

yeah i mean just look at ubisoft
>>
>>387739262
There's the fast sail in the HD version that automatically changes the wind direction
>>
>>387737513
no graphically it is pretty shit, Mario64 aged better because of the bright colors and simplistic designs.

OOT is a comfy little adventure game. Its okay that it is dated.

I kinda agree.
I mean, sure, you can look at oot knowing exactly what you are looking at and isn't unpleasant to the eye.
but games like pic related look way better than oot.

Sure but that wouldn't run on n64 hardware, it's closer to gamecube-tier

what ya talking about??
it's a psone game, it could perfectly run on a 64 if ported.
what I was going for is that oot looks ok, but only ok, not great or excellent like others make it appear. is not unpleasant to look at. has aged well in that regard but isn't anything special.

Yes, and this is something that pushes it over the edge and allows it to be the GOAT. The way things are colored is just the right balance of realism and cartoonishness that makes the whole thing feel adventurous in ways that few games have matched.
>>
>>387743710
Not that guy, but you are very wrong.
The PS1 and the N64 were so fundamentally different that porting is literally impossible.
PS1 had lots of VRAM for textures, and could handle a lot more vertices than N64, but it used a grid-system for rendering vertices (which made them snap) and the textures were "floaty". The N64 had mipmapping to hide extremely low res textures - On PS1 vertex paint got popular because they could render enough vertices for it to be useful.

In general, ps1 was better at texture, n64 was better for raw power
