After having extreme slowdown/PC meltdown on launch day, I kind of forgot about that game.

Does it have any penalties vs Tropico or Sim CIty? In Tropico, you just can't win. You could have a fantastic transit system leading to free housing, and people will still set up shanties everywhere.

I like having my downtown core in a grid
I can't really explain my personal brand of autism but for some reason I get really triggered by undeveloped/unused spaces in a part of the city that's supposed to be dense
parks and green spaces are fine if they're ones I've created, but even a sliver of unused "wild" land annoys me
send help/please be patient/etc.

Whatever you do, don't look at Orlando in Google maps (the actual city, none of that Disney shit). Wonky downtown grid with a lot of undeveloped land within the square mile the downtown is in. Then you have some of the most cancerous suburban layouts all around, especially near UCF. The city's got hardly any natural barriers to contain development too. I know this becuase I live there

seriously though, other than that it doesn't seem so bad, most of the "empty" space looks like parks or lakes
for some reason, in city-building games, never-used land looks to me like a wasteland rather than green space. I'm not sure it has a real-world parallel

Me too. Man, I remember when my city was small and comfy. Now it's a hellhole burdened by heavy traffic, smog, crime, and dead bodies piling up because emergency vehicles can't get to where they need to go.

And it's only going to get larger. The main highway, I-4, is going through a huge expansion but on the plus side the big interchange with SR 408 (the smaller east-west highway) is being compacted into a proper stack interchange instead of being all over the place like it is now. The lakes are a blessing and add character but yeah a lot of the empty lots are just that - empty lots.

Yep, the road network here is pretty infuriating but at least the roads are in good shape when compared to roads in the Northeast US.

I have 1800 mods and assets. This is not recommended. My computer will likely catch on fire soon.
Most of the city was done with the Ploppable RICO mod, which just lets you make the city the exact way you want it, at the expense of hueg amounts of time. You'll need Find It for quick searching and Plop The Growables to really make it work well. Also grab Precision Engineering to make road curves and stuff make sense (You want stuff to be on a nice 45 degree or 135 degree curve, or at 90 degree angles. I know about the not muh grid meme but you can't make things look compressed and real without it.)

Traffic is a nightmare on this game, but you probably already knew that. I've had more luck with my last two builds on just making as MANY access points to different cities and neighborhoods as possible, because when I used to just use one or two exits with roundabouts I'd get a mile long line in the exiting lane. This city works pretty well also since I have 6 train lines and about 80-ish bus lines serving it. Fuck money on this game, just turn on unlimited until you get it.

I really don't follow guides on it, I did learn a bit from the Oldshoes' guide on SimCity 4. I also used to watch some LPs of Skylines to get ideas, but it's been a while. Check out Flux's Rhinestone Island or something similar in detail.

If all else fails and you just want to have some fun, get No Problem and don't let anything despawn or break the city.
