The difference is that nowadays the 'games journalists' are more actively involved in negative advertising. They're the same bought-and-paid-for shills, but much more concerned with actively attacking anyone NOT paying them. Marxist identity politics are just one particularly powerful weapon for them.

Game journalism was more reliable back in the day. At least the journalists of the past didn't have a high risk of getting blacklisted if they expressed their opinion about a game. 9s and 10s were more rare and had a meaningful value.

Now its as if journalists have derailed as a whole and arranged scores are the norm. Their integrity is questionable these days.

I don't think there's anything wrong with talking about the politics a game endorses/supports.
Like if you guys hate "SJW bullshit", aren't these guys doing you a favour by mentioning the games that have/lack it?

Anyway the only legit major issues I have with game journalism is how they don't really serve as much more than expanded shop descriptions and as long as they focus on getting reviews out at the same time as the release that will continue to shoot them in the foot.

Games are often also defined by the community around them and how they persist in the longterm and the mindset of journalists drilling through a game to meet an often unreasonable deadline is just gonna shift their experience way too much for it to be considered representative.

Demographics of gaming changed. In the early 90's, it was fat loser nerds who did it and as such the reviewers were usually fat loser nerds (or at least in the eyes of the general public). As games grew so did the internet of mega companies such as Sony and Microsoft. By the time the Xbox360 came out, video games were generally seen as a small but decent hobby, but were still shaking off the 'lol loser nerd' idea. As more people who weren't lose nerds came in, largely thanks to Sports games like FIFA, NFL, NHL and NBA and due to super franchises such as Call of Duty, there was finally non-nerds in the demographic. This carried on but because of the now larger non-nerd base, companies start pandering to them by reducing the difficulty of games and reducing content in order to give out DLC's. As infrastructure improved and consoles became easier to afford, they came out more and so the games came with them. Eventually it hit an apex of 'it's OK to play this socially' that it created the start of 'poser' territory, where girls pretended to act like guys or act interested in video games in the hopes of meeting a Chad who played 'games' (read, Sports games + CoD). This eventually lead to reviewers needing a 'female opinion' on their team in order to cater for the posers. They slowly turned reviewers to their opinions and eventually others agreed.

This isn't the full story. You can add the fact social media basically encourages clickbait You have to remember The Big Bang Theory became popular in 2007 and encouraged girls to get into nerd culture because you'll meet a rich smart dude if you do

We're left with the fact games are big business now and every Indie developer wants a slice of the pie in the hopes of making it big. This leads to 'emotive' games like a kid dying of cancer or 'walking simulators'.

Finally, society changed, where negativity is a sin unless it's against a predetermined group. So such games get slammed and the non-game-but-has-lbgt-in-it ones don't

Every review website wants to be the first to review a game, and are therefore beholden to the tyrannical publisher who chooses which reviewers to get early access to their game to. The reason they care about being first so much is because consumers are impatient and will read the first review they can find, and then either lose interest or buy the game and not read any other review.

If people were patient and waited the amount of time it takes for a video game to release, a reviewer to buy it and play it and finally to write up and release an interview, then publishers wouldn't hold any power over the gaming media. But we don't live in that world.

Actually I'm fine with it because the attempts at normalizing homosexuality in video games are most of the time executed in such a hamfisted manner that they effectively vilify homosexuals by making them seem like they can't act like normal human beings, always behaving like some sort of...faggot, completely self-interested, flaunting their behavior in everyone's face, and forcing their sexuality onto everyone they meet. Every gay character is literally a walking trope of all of the things that people hate about gay people that makes them hate gay people, but written by people who have think that's exactly what gay people act like and we should embrace it.
It's really pretty funny overall, it's like trying to drive out KKK members by burning their crosses.

And the devs usually pay the price for their so called "political correctness" - if they want to listen to "game journalists" telling them to include some political agenda instead of just making good games, then they usually end up without jobs.

Well, if we look at history as a something repeating itself, we are currently in a sort of "blaxploitation" phase.

Developers have found out that pays to pander to minority groups for brownie points with the left, which is why several games and review outlets are employing that tactic for money.

My guess is that this fad will fizzle out as it won't seem like such a gimmick in a couple years to have a woman or a black dude in a video game (Even though they've already been in video games forever, but normies don't know any better).
