I meant it in the sense that you don't need the character to have a concrete, defined personality as you would need in books or movies

Mario (and moreso Pac-Man) stood out compared to other arcade characters because they had traits people could identify more with than the Galaga ships. Mario was always meant to be sort of a vessel that the player used to interact with the game world. He's a goofy design that works in the goofy environments and settings he's placed in, and he's never needed to be any more than that

Nah. Mario Kart 8 is selling remarkably well, that Rabbids game has caught people's attention after its E3 reveal and Odyssey will be huge. Nintendo just needs to stop phoning in 2D Mario and go big and bold like Tropical Freeze. They also need to stop homogenizing the art style and let the spinoffs have their own unique identity again.

Damn anon, you seem to not like video game nor have a single clue about game design, level design, sound design. The Mario Series has some of the best 2D platformers, and it is still the king of 3D platformers. No amount of Sly, Ratchet & Clank, Jak, Crash will ever change that, because those only adds fluff, environmnents, guns, anything, but never get the level design right.
But still the first Crash was an excellent platformer, staying true to the jump mechanic and developping levels accordingly.
But for 3D level design? There's just no other game which reach the heights of Sunshine with its levels without FLUDD
