in game, idk, I guess he wanted to have the same codename but call himself by liquid because his brother and everyone else already calls solid, snake, same goes with solidus.

Same reason why Big Boss at the end of MGS4 isn't voiced by Hayter, it would've made sense, but it would've been confusing.

As far as Liquid knew Solid was the desired outcome of the 'Les Infantes' project, and Liquid was the unwanted leftovers. This makes Solid represent the idealized default, and liquid the imperfect variation, thus solid is referred to simply as Snake, and Liquid requires an additional designation. It's a constant reaffirmation of Liquid's inferiority complex.
