I used my +10 saw cleaver, numbing mist and fire paper. Don't get greedy, and time your attacks. That's literally everything you have to do. It might take a while, but you'll at least beat him.

And keep in mind that I'm complete shit at this game, and I killed him on my ninth try using only those three items.

Lead the guy back to the bottom of the stairs. He'll start walking back slowly, allowing you to throw poison knives at him. Keep leading him back down whenever he walks too far away. Repeat until dead.

One fuck up and you're toast. This guy has probably the narrowest margin of error of any Souls enemy, including bosses. I like the fight, but it feels cheap at times. Getting one shot by a bullet is gay and the fag gets really shooty at low HP.
