Why is the whole dubs vs. subs thing so much more of a contentious

Video games and anime aren't taken seriously as a medium. Meanwhile, it's sacrilegious to dub something like an Akira Kurosawa film.

Because no film enthusiast would ever watch a dub under any circumstances, for animation you could make a case for it

In my opinion, if a game takes place in Tokyo, especially historic cities with a lot of culture behind them, leave it in Japanese with subs.

Yakuza 1 was a complete miss by trying to dub it into English, for example. Sometimes language is inseparable to a local city's culture

Dubbing video games is, unlike most other mediums, a logical extension of these strengths: removing a language barrier makes it easier to react to information quickly, and (provided that the acting isn't garbage) allows players to better relate to characters over long periods of time.
