Anyone up for a vidya trivia/easter egg thread?

>Doom 2's final level, "Icon of Sin", has a very strange easter egg. Upon entering the level, a voice speaking in an apparently unknown language can be heard, and the player must defeat the Icon of Sin, which is stationary, and a plethora of demons. If the character plays the voice backwards, however, they can clearly hear the words "To win the game, you must kill me, John Romero" being spoken, and if the player manages to jump into the Icon of Sin, they can find the severed head of programmer John Romero on a stick.

>Star Wars: Battlefront 2 (2005) was originally going to have Qui-Gon Jinn as a playable hero. He was to be playable in both Naboo maps, and was set to be voiced by his original actor, Liam Neeson. At the time, however, Neeson was busy filming his role as the character Ra's Al Ghul in the superhero film Batman Begins, directed by Christopher Nolan, and was unable to provide his voice to the character. Pandemic eventually opted to cut the character out of the game entirely.

>Fallout 3 was released in October of 2008. During that very same year, Barack Obama ran for the position of President of the United States of America, and would eventually make history by being elected as the first African-American President of the United States in November of 2008. One developer at Bethesda seemed to dislike this possibility, and as a result, a rather controversial easter egg found its way into the game.
>When playing Fallout 3, if the player travels to the ruins of DC, they will find a smoldering crater in what used to be the location of the White House. Originally, if one were to enter the utility tunnel located nearby, they would find a note that read "...and let it be known that, should the United States of America ever be called to nuclear war against Russia and Chine, then I, President Barack Hussein Obama, will answer that call...". The note was soon discovered by players, and it was quickly patched out by Bethesda, with a copy of the unarmed skill book Pugilism Illustrated taking the controversial note's place instead.

>Call of Duty: Black Ops is set during the Cold War. One mission has the protagonist (Mason) travel to the Pentagon, where they meet then-President John F. Kennedy. At one point, Mason has a brief vision of himself pointing a gun at the President's head, before apparently snapping out of it. Later on in the game, we learn that Mason was the victim of brainwashing by the game's main antagonist, Nikita Dragovich, and it is even implied that Mason was the one who assassinated Kennedy. Originally, the game was actually going to let the player commit the assassination in a level simply titled "Dallas". The mission would involve Mason shooting Kennedy with a sniper rifle, then running off and framing Lee Harvey Oswald for the crime. This level ended up being removed from the game later on in development, although the references to the Kennedy assassination still exist in the game.

>Star Wars Episode 1 Racer was released on May 19, 1999, to coincide with the release of Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. The game was originally going to have 4 extra tracks that were exclusive to the N64 version of the game. These tracks were to be set in Otoh Gunga, the underwater city of the Gungans which infamous Star Wars character Jar Jar Binks was banished from. The tracks were going to utilize the bubbles that enveloped the city, which racers could enter and use to float around the underwater tracks in. The cut levels were also going to have players be chased by some of the underwater creatures which also appeared in the film the game was based on, but unfortunately, due to time constraints and the limitations of the N64, the levels were cut.

>The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, released in 2006, is a Role-Playing Video Game set in the fictional region of Cyrodill, a province of Tamriel. Players can created any character they wish, with different classes and skills being available for the player to choose from. If the player does a quest for the Daedric Price Hermaeus Mora, they will be rewarded with a book known as the Oghma Infinium. This book, upon being read, will immediately grant the player an increase of 3 skills by 10 points, depending on which "path" is chosen.
>The Oghma Infinium went through some drastic changes in design before Bethesda finally settles on its final appearance (Wrapped in the different skins of all of Tamriel's races, all sewed together onto the book). One design drew heavy inspiration from the Codex Gigas, also known as the "Devil's Bible". The Oghma Infinium at one point resembled the book almost perfectly, even having its own version of the Codex Giga's cover. The design went through some more changes after that, however, until finally resembling the Oghma Infinium we see today.

>Fallout 2 is a post-nuclear role playing game released for the PC on September 30, 1998, set in a post-apocalyptic version of the United States. When traveling across New California, they will eventually come upon the mining town of Redding. If you go into what is known as the "Great Wanamingo Mine", you will encounter alien-like subterranean creatures known as Wanamingos. Despite their alien-like appearance, they are actually a mutated form of underground life, although it is now known what exact animal they used to be. The player character is tasked with killing every Wanamingo, and it is believed they are all extinct as a result of the protagonist's actions.
>Concept art for these creatures can be found in the book The Art of Fallout 3. It is believed they were originally going to appear in the game, but the idea ended up on the cutting room floor. Wanamingos were also going to appear in Lonesome Road, an expansion pack for Fallout: New Vegas (a spiritual successor to Fallout 1 and 2), but the subterranean creatures known as Tunnelers took their place instead.

>In 1996, Florida pest control officer Ricardo Lopez began keeping a video diary. In it, he detailed his plans to construct a letter bomb, which he planned on sending to Icelandic singer Bjork, intent on disfiguring or even killing the pop star. After mailing it to her, he returned home, shaved his head, and painted his face in red and green greasepaint, with black makeup for the lips. He then committed suicide with a .38 caliber revolver, all of which he recorded on 8mm tapes.
>Ricardo was to make a cameo in Grim Fandango, a game published by LucasArts. At one point, during year 3, Manny Calavera (The protagonist) manages to get a gun, and comments on how "All I need now is a video camera and some red and green paint". The line was cut from the final release, however, after the studio feared backlash from the latino community over such a joke being made. An image of Ricardo (Pic related) was also supposed to appear on one of the desks in-game, but this too was scrapped.

>The video game Hitman: Blood Money has a mission titled "Amendment XXV", in which the player must successfully infiltrate the White House and assassinate 2 targets, 1 of whom is the (fictional) Vice President of the United States, Daniel Morris. The title is obviously a reference to the 25th amendment to the US constitution, which states that the Vice President shall take the President's place should he ever leave office, whether through death or otherwise.
>During the development of the game, the developers played with the idea of having Agent 47 (The protagonist) assassinate the real-life Vice President, Dick Cheney. This idea ended up being scrapped very early on, with many of the game's developers stating that they never actually took the idea seriously.

>During its development, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 ended up cutting about a third of its levels. One of these was "Genocide City Zone", and while not much is known about this stage, its name is said to come as a result of the game's Japanese developers not having a completely firm grasp on the english language. It is also believed that the idea for this zone came from an earlier concept from Sonic 2 involving time travel (Which would later go on to be used in Sonic CD), and that GCZ was to have been a future or past version of another stage, possibly Emerald Hill Zone or Chemical Plant Zone.

>In 2001, Lego released the Bionicle line in an attempt to create their own unique toy line with its own dedicated story. The line ended up becoming a huge success and helped Lego from going bankrupt. Bionicle ended up becoming one of its top selling lines (Along with Lego Star Wars), and by 2006 it accounted for about a quarter of all of Lego's profits.
>At one point, there was to be a PC game released alongside the line, titled Bionicle: The Legend of Mata Nui, and would have covered the toy line's first year of story. Unfortunately, the game ended up being delayed and ultimately scrapped, but a few people were given promotional development CDs with the game on it; A glitch prevents players from getting past the first level, however, and no solution for this glitch has ever been found.

>Grand Theft Auto is an open-world sandbox video game series that allows the players to commit various crimes, among them the ability to commit the crime that the game is named after. The series has become a huge hit in recent years and is arguably Rockstar's most successful franchise. Before the series was rebooted in 2008, Rockstar released 2 spin-off games - Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City stories. Each game serves as a companion to 2 of the games in the original GTA series (GTA 3 and Vice City, respectively), and give players background information on certain characters and events that occur in the main games.
>At one point, Rockstar was planning to release a Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Stories. The game would have let players take on the role of Sean "Sweet" Johnson, the brother of San Andreas' protagonist CJ Johnson. Reportedly, the game's story would involve the Grove Street Family's loss of power in the region (Which is a major plot point in San Andreas). The game's ending would have shown the Green Sabre killing Beverly (Sweet's mother), tying things together with the intro to San Andreas. The game ended up being cut early into development, however, and GTA 4 was released in 2008, about 2 years after San Andreas Stories was scrapped.

>Stephen King's IT is a horror novel released in the year 1986, revolving around a shapeshifting monster which takes the form of a clown named Pennywise, and then uses this form to scare young children before luring them in and eating them. The story was later adapted into a television miniseries in 1990, starring Tim Curry as the titular character, and is often regarded as the reason why so many children in the 90s grew up afraid of clowns.
>Following the success of the miniseries, IT was going to be adapted into a point-and-click adventure game for the PC, similar in nature to the critically acclaimed I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream (1995). The 2 were to share many similarities, including multiple endings, and IT's video game adaptation would take inspiration from both the novel and the miniseries. Unfortunately, the project never got too far into development, and the game was ultimately scrapped.

>The Sims is a single-player interactive life simulation game franchise, in which the player controls the lives of various people in-game, known as "sims". Players can control everything from how these sims look, to where they live, to what they do, although sims are still given some free will and are not entirely reliant on the player's input. In the original Sims (2000) and in The Sims 3: Generations (An expansion pack for Sims 3, 2011), sims would sometimes receive prank phone calls. These can vary from funny, to scary, to genuinely disturbing. According to some reports, however, it seems the developers also decided to play a prank of their own on the players.
>Apparently, in some copies of the original release of the Generations expansion pack, some prank phone calls would be accompanied by a quick flash of an image, followed by a sudden, loud noise. These are more commonly known as "Screamers", and are often made with the intent of scaring unwary people who watch them. Some of these images were said to be very disturbing, and would often terrify new players, especially when the game was played late at night. Not much else is known about this supposed feature, as it was quickly patched out following the add-on's release. Like the prank calls that accompany them, the images apparently ranged from strange (An image of serial killer John Wayne Gacy), to disturbing (An image of comedian Christopher Farley's corpse), to downright terrifying (Images of "ghosts", as described by players).

That's all I have right now, unfortunately. Maybe I'll find and post some more later if the thread is still up.

>Redline (1998) had an Easter egg where if the player enters an abandoned school and shoots down the door to the janitors closet they would find various messages of the janitor collecting student fecal matter and urine and bathing in it within a cauldron. The messages described it as "bringing his vomit to his throat and his semen to his hand".
