Whatever, I pirate because it's easier than using steam.

Bullshit, you would pirate anyway and you sue the whole "try before buy" thing as an excuse for your degeneracy, because in the end when "try before you buy" you're just gonna say the game is shit when you beat it anyway

I use steam because it's easier than pirating some games. Plus you don't have to set rules/ test installers and exes in a VM first just to make sure the download is safe.
>>
>>387638593
and don't hive me that private tracker bullshit, nothing is safe and if you think otherwise toy deserve to have your identity stolen and computer filled with more viruses than a Vegas stripper
>>
>>387634604
On PC, people use Demos to datamine shit or in some cases hack it to get almost the entire game.
I don't know if that's the case now, but when you downloaded "Demos/Trials" on PSN or XBLA, in some cases it literally downloaded the entire game, and when you decided to buy it, it downloaded an "unlocker" which had few kb. This is simply unfeasible on PC as people could simply mod the game files to get the "full" version.
>>
>>387637029
oy vey wouldn't want that!
>>
>release demo before or on game's release
>not as optimized/compatible since it's very likely a pre-release build
>publisher won't want to put money into 'fixing' the demo build rather than the one they released for money

>release a polished demo after release
>people will pirate it due to impatience on waiting on a demo

You can't win. This is why Steam's refund policy is a push in the right direction.
>>
>>387634604

>>
>>387637029
even without a source I believe it. wildstar lost a ton of preorders after people played the shitty beta demo.
>>
>>387639538
Just release the demo WITH the game.

Or even better, offer a timed trial run of the actual product so people can see if the game is good or not.

It's really not that hard.

But companies don't do it.
Why?
Because they sell on hype and false advertising.
>>
>>387634979
I'm not gonna buy it if I pirate it and like it but if I get to try the demo and I like it I would obviously buy it.
>>
>I need to "try" a niche game before I buy it
>rushes out to buy the latest Pokemon or Halo game at launch without ever "trying" it first
Pirate logic.
>>
>>387639314
some devs do it on pc
>>
>>387640620
It's not a big deal when the game has already been released and pirated to hell, but if they release a lazy Demo without cutting content before the launch, the devs are asking to get fucked.
>>
>>387638593
>test installers and exes in a VM first

What's a VM? I just downloaded a really dodgy game. There's no comments on it, although the host is "trusted". I am asking you for advice on how to test it safety.
>>
>>387634604
But I'm not doing a free trial I'm stealing.
Though I usually do buy modern games. I download movies and old vidya. Books vary from time to time. If it's ancient literature I usually buy a good annotated edition. If not, just download the book.
>>
>>387634604
I only pirate when I can't afford to buy.
I already buy too many games

virtual machine, its a pretend computer (like an emulator) in your computer. You can use it as a perfect new environment to run files and see what new stuff gets installed in the system. Then once you're done you reset back to brand new and since it's not a real computer no infection was made.

Oh boy, free product to mod the time out of to make the game think it's a purchased copy.
>>
>>387642281
But that's already happening with pirating.

They mod the DRM out to make the game think its a purchased copy...

At least with a timed trial we would have the option of purchasing the game (if its worth it) and continuing our progress where we left off.

It's probably safest to install within a VMware Snapshot, and then copy the install directory out.

Had it not been for pirating, I'd never known those games were any good/ran worth a shit.

That being said, my rule of thumb is:
>Pirate
>Play for 1 hour
>Delete if it's not catching me/runs like ass
or
>Copy save and purchase game
>>
>>387646228
This is pretty much my rule too though I usually give myself 2 - 3 hours of game time + any extra if I have trouble getting it working.
>>
>>387635635
This. The BRs that pirate everything aren't going to stop just because a demo was released.
>>
>>387634604
I agree to an extent.

Many game companies blatantly falsely advertise their games with fake graphics that don't represent the final product at all. This has been my primary reason to pirate and torrent virtually every game in the last 5 years
>>
>>387646273
Usually, if it doesn't work within the first 30 minutes or it runs like dicks, I just uninstall and write it off as a bad crack or a shit game.
>>
>>387634604

>>
>>387647765
not everyone is as evil as the media paints them to be. I torrent games. If i like the game i buy it, without fail. if i don't like the game i delete it from my hard drive and don't bother. there are others who share my practices, as i can guarantee i'm not a unique thinker on this.
>>
You don't need to justify to anyone why you do something you know is illegal. You've made the choice because either you don't care about the consequences or it's too tempting.

Coming up with some type of moral crusade is the stupidest shit. I don't care if you pirate, and you shouldn't care if I or anyone else do either way.
>>
>>387634604
I wouldn't even bother with a free trial if it existed, just watching reviews and gameplay is enough to determine whether a game is interesting or not.
>>
Pirating is A-Ok in my book if their isn't a physical edition available, or if the physical copy is stupid expensive. I'm not gonna pay for some a license to use something I payed for that can be taken away at any point for any reason.

In Bulgaria steam sells games in euro. I basically have to pay double the price for a game ( 1 euro = 1.95 levs. A 60 euro game will cost me 120 levs. Average salary here is 800 levs ( 400 euro ) in Germany is 2200 euro ( 4400 levs ). So tell me, why should I buy a game?

>>
>>387640461
Some of the niche games I want cost $60. You're damn right i'm pirating that shit first. At least another small company puts out demos of their game to try. They're decent enough too. Shame they're fucking jews to the extreme.
>>
>>387635635
Problem is we don't have demos anymore because they used to be too good. Remember the Doom days when the demo of every game was basically 1/3rd or 1/2 the whole game?

I think it was Descent that basically killed long game demos/shareware for the industry because 90% of the people the played it only played the shareware because it was literally the good half of the game.

>>387634604
I buy a lot of games (500+ in my library)
I usually pirate a game before I buy it to see if it's worth it or not.
YMMV, but not everyone does the wrong thing.

Instead of a demo, just give us a reasonable timed play on the full game. When time is up, you either buy or uninstall.
>>
>new game i'm not sure on, know i'll probably only play it for 2 days then never touch it again
>pirate it
>it's meh and no replayabilty, a cashgrab or it's early access trash that's unfinished
>decide it's not worth putting $90 down for
>play it for 2 nights and uninstall it
I have a $1 for 1 hour of play time rule. I'll buy a $20 game if I know I'll get at least 20 hours of use out of it, any less and I pirate or avoid it.
