How come video games cant do lighting correctly? Even when you have really good models and textures, the game will not look really good with shitty lighting.
Cus it's expensive as fuck to compute properly and so developers take shortcuts
because hardware limitations and other areas of gameplay are more important.
>>387629510
They take shortcuts for everything. AI chess players don't compute every possible move because it's too expensive, instead they take shortcuts but can still consistently defeat any grandmaster.
The question is why no shortcuts have been discovered that look realistic and can be achieved in real time. "Good enough" shortcuts have been discovered for almost everything else.
I can't wait till video games can perfectly replicate real life on a molecular level, with chemical reactions and shit
>>387630190
same
You have to choose. Its either really good backed lighting and the game get shitted on for being static, or all dynamic but most people would whine about performance, so devs use cheap tricks like SSAO.
Really, even when we get lighting that behaves exactly like in real life idiots will still not be satisfied because they dont see the difference or just think it doesn't look realistic.
>>387629193
>How come video games cant do lighting correctly?
I disagree.

>>387631742
that really isnt even impressive
and show a model of someone in that game
>>387631742
@ night
They can but nobody gives a fuck about the steps in a wrestling game so they dont put the effort in on them
>>387631803
>>387631816
Dont act like steps arent important
>>387629193
Lighting is hard to nail, nigga.
>>387631803
unedited
>tfw no other games with atmosphere like this
>>387629193
>Using a rehashed annual series that continuously gets worse every year
I still see people playing WWE2K16, merely because the roster was so good. The engine itself, and the gameplay should have been scrapped ages ago.
>>387631613
>or just think it doesn't look realistic.
This. Just look at the retards crying about the "blue fog" in Witcher or GTA.
>>387631810
yeah see how its night time with no light source but you can still see highlights in the grass? that's not how light works.
Although obviously you can find better examples with baked shit, Star Citizen has some of the best dynamic lighting I've seen.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8Cn2VILi3c
>>387631894
Yeah, see? The lighting on him is shit
>>387631816
But the video was *specifically* to show off the "improved graphics and lighting engine" so they zoomed in on the steps specifically.
>>387632301
I know it's not 100% on-point, but the game does a good job and actually simulates a 24 hour cycle and night doesn't look like total shit like in 99% of games
pic related is in the woods at night
>>387632403
Ahh didnt know there was a video. Carry on....
>>387632357
You're right.
I just like to shill my shitty game
>>387631613
-t lazy dev
Behaving like real life shadows≠Looking like real life shadows
Some games do a really great job with their overall aesthetic and hold up to the test of time like Metro
Most AAA games on the other hand use AO that looks like it was added with MSPaint's spray tool
>>387629193
This is an example of bad AO
Pic related is an example of 10/10 lighting
How come games just don't set their game to a cloudy day in Britian? It's like no shadows mode
>>387632068
2k17 was a buggy mess that deletes peoples savegames, 16 is the best of the recent ones.
18 has a new graphics engine and "improved" lighting.
>>387632561
That is very good lighting, but it's easier to do in a streamlined game than in say an open-world game, it's not really simulated lighting that can change, it stays static.
>>387632342
>he actually thinks this video is a video game
>he actually thinks this game will be released
>he actually thinks the final product, if it ever does come out, will resemble that video even slightly.
ray tracing in real time isn't possible on consumer hardware, so reflections now are just cloned pixels, reversed with an offset, check out the basics of pixel shading
>>387632587
That would actually be a clever way of making options more in-game.
>Choose high quality shadows
>Get sunny day
>Choose low quality
>Get clouds
>>387632691
so?
>>387632587
>>387632752
Don't those GTA graphics mods do that?
Why do they even need to takje a shortcut in a WWE game? All the objects and light sources are in the same few places all the time and there isn't a huge world or anything. Can't they make that arena look as good as possible?
>>387632683
I didn't know 2k17 was an open world game
>>387632686
I already play it dummy.
>>387629193
No matter what improvements are made the game always looks like dog shit when the bell rings.. every fucking year.
Give us a new engine ffs.
>>387629193
thankfully we have based nvidia and hbao+
>>387632942
Yukes is the most incompetent and lazy developer I've ever seen. For 3 years the WWE games were full on copy pastes of eachother, adding nothing but new wrestlers.
>>387632942
Cause they make it yearly and better graphics won't likely get more money.
My guess anyways. Most of this industry's reasoning for "why don't they?" is just "cause we're still going to get paid the same"
>>387632946
who the fuck said I was talking about 2k17 you newfaggot?
get yourself some reaction pictures, that shit is downright pathetic
>>387629193
Why should devs put in the extra effort when you fucks will just bitch about it anyway?
>>387630190
If it wasn't for consoles holding us back we'd be there now.
>>387633173
We need something to talk about, otherwise we'd realize how empty our lives our.
What were they thinking bros?
>>387633353
This is not an improvement
>>387633353
Are those images taken from the same platform? Because left looks like PC and right looks like XB1 or someting
>>387633138
>what is context
>who is op
>>387633461
I'd assume so. They're supposed to be showing off how much better the new games models and lighting are. The right hand side is the new game.
>>387632691
so now every reflective surface angle rendered is exponentially more GPU data
>>387633173
There have been multiple examples of good lighting itt
>>387633353
What's that on the right, a PS2 port? Damn, that looks like shit.
>Have to release a new version of a game yearly
>Doesn't even manage to keep the same graphics
>>387633505
I'm not, why do you think you're talking to OP you faggot?
Did I say I am OP?
Did I say anything about WWE?
no?
go fuck yourself
>>387632561
I didnt mention aesthetic but yeah for now it would be best if games used shadow and light stylishly.
iirc global illumination is baked in Metro and the AO is pretty faint. Also it's one of the few games where normal maps actually affects shadows.
>>387633353
