What is the point of this? It's just used as a big Start button in all the games I own.

more like select button
just another dumb sony gimmick that will be gone in the next console, like sixaxis

>accidentally clicks share
>>
it keeps companies from selling cheaper third party controllers
>>
>>387624967
And it's a nice mouse touchpad/scroller if you're using it on pc
>>
>>387624792
I think it could be useful but sony doesn't make much use of it
You should be able to use it as a mouse pointer in like all the menus
>>
>>387624792
Essentially a clickable touchscreen. Really cool but underutilized. Actually makes sim and 4x stuff feasible since you can use it as a multi-input trackpad. And if you don't want to use it, it doesn't fuck with the layout of the traditional controller inputs.
>>
>>387624967
DS4windows?
>>
Gravity Rush 2 uses it fairly decently but that's the only game I know of offhand that uses it. That function itself isn't really necessary for it, some simple button combo could have been used instead.
>>
>>387625306
>Actually makes sim and 4x stuff feasible since you can use it as a multi-input trackpad
Any PS4 games that prove this?
>>
>>387624792
Only time I've used it was during Gal Gun where I had to simulate pushing a girls arse out of a window that she was stuck in. It really felt the controller was built around a silly ero game instead of the other way around,.
>>
>>387624792

It's a nintendo tier gimmick that makes the controller cost more than it should
>>
>>387625059
All it does is take a screenshot though. You can even disable the notification icon so all you hear is the sound.
>>
>>387625439
I don't think it adds to the cost very much, sony just charges a lot because they can
That seems to be the theme with ps+ too
>>
>>387624792
>Giant fucking flashlight on the back of the controller is entirely useless and only serves to drain the battery faster

>>
>>387625559
does the light do literally anything?
>>
>>387625642
The light is color coded to indicate who's player 1 and 2
>>
>>387625642
Only use I've seen is in Resident Evil Revalations 2, it changes color depending on character health. It's neat but not really needed.
>>
>>387625642
It's used in some cool ways, such as in Transistor, when your sword talks to you, the light blinks in sync with the dialogue. Also in Witcher 3 the color changes depending on what magic sign you have equipped. It only really is useful in the 2nd gen dualshocks since you cant even see the light on the 1st gen ones.
>>
>>387625642
It can change colors depending on the game you're playing. So it literally doesn't anything.
>>
>>387625642
Shows you which player you are and flashed when low on health in some games. In Metro redux it lights up bright when you're able to be seen in light and when hidden it's really dim

Metro is the game I've seen make most use out of the lightbar
>>
>>387625642

It flashes red and blue when you have cops after you in GTA V. The controller also uses its speaker for police radio and player cellphone.
>>
>>387625642
Think the PS camera uses the light to track players.
>>
Farcry 4 used it as a way to select weapons by sliding in the direction which had the weapon that I enjoyed. Pretty good when using it on PC as well.
>>
>>387625642
Some games use it as a health bar, which is completely unnecessary.
Until Dawn uses it for parts where you're supposed to stay still.
>>
>>387625458
you can also use it to save a clip of the last 15 minutes you were playing, which is what i usually use it for

nah that's the gyro
>>
Rayman Legends uses it as a scratch-off ticket.
It's fun
>>
>>387625642
It drains the controller battery in order to wear it down faster so you have to replace your controller once the battery completely shits itself.
>>
>>387624883
But the DS4 has gyro which is literally just a not shitty evolution of the sixaxis you dummy.
>>
>>387624792
How else are they going to constantly drain the battery?
>>
>>387625059

>>

>>
>>387625959

>>
>>387626148
Playing fighting games it happens more than it needs to. Which is anytime at all.
>>
>>387624792
Just being an extra button is great though. I love it wheb games use it as the map button.
>>
>>387625642
It changes from blue or red in Infamous Second Son depending on how good or evil you are.
Also changes from green to red depending on your health in Fallout 4, and changes to orange when youre in power armor.
>>
>>387626274
I played a shit ton of Tekken, GG, and BB and never once pressed the share button by accident
You must be holding the controller wrong
>>
>>387624792
I hate this fucking thing. I kept accidentally rubbing it while playing Gravity Rush so I kept dodging randomly

And that was me playing with DS4 on PC
>>
>>387626791
You can disable the light though

>>387626737
Yeah in 1 you could tap it to dodge like on the vita version

> It's just used as a big Start button in all the games I own.
And..... what's the problem with that, exactly? You just answered your own fucking question.

Just because it's called a TouchPad doesn't mean it's only used for swipe motions. It's also clickable 2 buttons, which devs do use (as you yourself admited). That's enough of a use to justify its existence. I don't understand your fucking retarded question.
Some games like EDF4.1 use it with swipes for voice comands, GravityRush2 uses it to change forms (with swipes), so on and so forth. But that doesn't mean each and every game NEEDS to use it as anything other than a regular button.
>>
>>387625642
Yakuza 0 changes color based on your fighting style.
>>
>>387626987
I played GR as I was getting used to the DS4 and it was so fucking irritating
>>
>>387624792
You can give your pod headpats in 2B's game.
>>
DS4 is perfectly functional, and the touchpad is just extra space for extra control options.
Now this touchpad here is the one I have questions about.
There hasn't been a single vita game that uses it since 2013 or so.
All it's for now is emulating shoulder buttons when controlling PS1/PS4 games
>>
>PS4 light annoyingly shows up on your screen to break immersion
>Xbone light blinds players in dark rooms/at night

What did the industry mean by this?

So far I've played one PS4 game that used the touchpad for navigating the map screen. Of course I was so accustomed to the pad being ignored for anything besides being a giant Select button that I assumed the map screen was just bugging out when my thumb brushed against the pad.
>>
>>387625642
in GTA V it's blue when you play as Michael, Green when you play as Franklin, and orange when you play as Trevor, and flashes blue and red when the cops are chasing you
>>
>>387625642
well i think it was mostly meant to be used with ps camera that was pretty much abandoned right away.

other than that mostly just indicator for stuff. but when you're playing you don't even see the light so hmh weird stuff.
>>
>>387627091
GR was the second PS game I ever played, with GR2 being the first. I guess I was just lucky I never hit it.

I bind the swipe to reload and the button itself to screenshot. It's great for using as a mouse to browse the web while sitting back.
>>
>>387625059
The Joycon is the worst with this must've taken 50 random screenshots when playing Snipperclips
>>
>>387627358
how fat are your hands
>>
>>387624792
Play a game that uses it, and it's great. Very good for maps, inventory, or resetting position in fighting game training modes.
>>
>>387627878
Not him but I only use the very outter rims of the analogs, it happens sometimes when I orient my thumb on the top portion too much.
>>
>>387627031
>That's enough of a use to justify its existence
not enough of a use to justify it costing more than last gen's controllers
>>
>>387624792
There's no way of telling if a feature will be popular on a controller. Analog sticks we're a shot in the dark when they first came out, and now you cant find a controller without them. They always try a few new things each time around and sometimes something catches on
>>
>>387628860
PS3 controllers were 60 and so are PS4.
>>
>>387628860
Woah, a current controller costs slightly more than a controller did a literal decade ago? Oh man!
It's the same price as Xbone's controller, and Switch's controllers are more expensive, so there is zero excuse to bitch about it. It's clearly not because of the touchpad that DS4 "costs more" than DS3.
>>
>>387624792
It was simply implemented because nintendo was releasing a console with a touch screen in the middle of the controller. So this was a cheap quick way to also have touch controls in the middle.
>>
>>387629014
frankly the xbox one controllers are too expensive too

>>387629001
Xbox 360 controllers and wii remotes were 40
>>
Its pretty good for text entry desu
>>
Absolute fucking retardation. It's giant and fucks up the positioning of other buttons because of how fucking large it is, and by the needs of the industry it literally cannot be used because that would mean developers would need to introduce features for a game specific to one version (in an industry where nearly every game is released for the big three platforms). It's nothing but a stupid "INNOVATION" bullet point so Sony could whip their dicks out and waggle it around on the stage of E3/TGS/gamescom/whatever the fuck. Can't wait for the PS5 controller to have a fucking light switch in the middle.
>>
>>387624967
this 2bh. It's sad ps4 users can't even use the controller to it's actual potential. Sony inadvertently made the best pc controller
>>
>>387629278
360 controllers have been $50 for a long time. Maybe you can find them cheaper online somewhere but thats retail.
>>
>>387625306
>And if you don't want to use it, it doesn't fuck with the layout of the traditional controller inputs.
it makes the """options""" and """share""" buttons really small and hard to press compared to any other controller
>>
>>387625642
>>387625885
>>387627618
it's just because of the camera thing. and they don't let us turn it off even though PS4s don't include a camera anymore and it's useless outside of PSVR.
>>
>>387625642
It was originally made for use with VR tech. The man that led the design team wasn't able to spill the beans on that for so long. He took so much shit over it.
>>
>>387625121
>>387627680
>mouse
Mine's extremely jittery and locks to 90 degree angles in DS4Windows. I know it can be better because steering the map in Yakuza 0 with it is way more accurate.
How do you do it on PC?
>>
>>387631414
Don't use DS4Windows, just use Steam's native PS4 support.

I have it set up so one USB and Bluetooth is for the unofficial drivers and the all the other USB ports work with Steam.

I don't have any experience with DS4Windows, though. I just use the drivers that is based off of.

>>387631919
what the fuck are you shitposting about
>>
>>387626843
You can only do that if you connect it to a PC
>>
>pressure-sensitive buttons
>motion controls
>touchpad
>light bar
What's next, and why do they even bother? The pressure-sensitive buttons had so much potential and wound up being used in like two games. The motion controls are neat although rarely ever used. The touchpad and light bar just devour your battery with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
>>
what's the best controller for pc gayman anons

Battery life isn't even bad unless you're telling me you play for 8+ hours and don't have the foresight to charging it or having a second controller already charging.
