Double Dragon Neon wasn't that long ago, that was pretty great. And Senran Kagura 2.

Its a simple genre and there's not very much that can be done to update it short of making a game like Yakuza, where it is filled to the brim with non-combat shit to mask the fact the fighting is pretty shallow.

There's plenty they can do to make beat em ups more exciting like scripted events and cool scenarios, weapons to use, mounts and vehicles, branching paths through the level or the entire game, tons of cool little details and interactivity.
