Is there any game that can surpass Vampire Bloodlines in terms of memorable characters? Just the sheer size and ratio is spectacular, even the most minor characters make a lasting impression.

I'd also argue TW games, TW2 having probably the best cast.

That said, VtM:B's characters were pretty awesome.

JC Denton himself has less personality than MGS 2 Raiden (who was made to be a blank slate)
And Tracer Tong

The only characters in DX I can remember are Paul Denton and Maggie Chow

Okay and Gunther and Flatlander Woman

So 4 total

SMAC has memorable characters. Even the random ones referenced in the 'Datalinks' like T.M. Morgan Reilly are still relatively known due to the accompanying quotes, and they all have well defined roles in the story, whether it's Miriam's reasoning for restraint in the face of technological advancement, Zakharov's musing on Man's role in relation to the Universe, or even Nwabudike Morgan's South Park-tized self telling Lal to get off his land.

Pic related always stood out the most to me, though. I have yet to find a game that even comes close to the intellectual depth and characterization SMAC had. Of course, your mileage might vary.

>I was really hoping for an early end screen from that quest.
So did I, but honestly, I like the way it panned out a lot. It's such a slap in the face to the player. A lesson on just how much he is not a master of his own destiny.

It very well may have been me, I seem to recall something like that. As for cheats... well, I never finished The Void cheat-free, so I can't really hold it against you.
But I'm wondering what gave you so much trouble about it... Was it just that it's getting increasingly tedious, or did you legitimately find the game too hard, or too stressful/depressing to push through? Not judging, just curious.

not the same anon here. I got this game recently and it seems really interesting but also very chunky and somewhat tedious? I don't know I feel really lost and the characters don't really feel compelling and more like infodumps(especially minor npcs). maybe it's because I only just started but the story and the world haven't been presented to be convincing (not "real", convincing) enough for me to want to keep going. should I keep at it? am I doing something wrong?
>>

>Mass Effect 1 did it and I see no one complaining.
No one complained about the lack of shooting since the gunplay in ME 1 is complete dogshit.
Not like the RPG mechanics are any better, but only plebs actually like ME and think it's deep.

The first day is done pretty badly mate. Starts off being smart by having you be a detective as a way of introducing you to the world but ends up being a massive expository dump. Things get way better in day 2 and continue getting better until the end. The characters feel incredibly human as you progress.
As for the gameplay itself, I can't really help you with getting its clunk and tedium since I just fucking cheated.

>I got this game recently and it seems really interesting but also very chunky and somewhat tedious?
It is very, very tedious, slow and frustrating. There is no sugarcoating about that. The game presents an amazing narrative, and amazing way to make player role in the narrative meaningful: but it's not, at almost any moment, fun. You either will get invested in the world enough that the slow pacing and times walking will seem like a minor inconvenience, or you'll very much hate it.

>I don't know I feel really lost and the characters don't really feel compelling
This is hard for me to understand since I fell in love with the settings almost immediately, but as for the characters and settings, feel lost is very appropriate. Especially if you play as Bachelor, who literally does not know his way around the place. It's a confusing game, and presenting genre and style and settings that most gamers aren't used to in the slightest... And characters (as everything else in the game) evolve over time. So I'd say that you don't judge them too soon.
On the other hand, if you don't get it, you might not get it. It's a game for absolute minority of players.

I'd say give it a little more time, let the characters and plot play out a little more, but if you can't do it, don't beat yourself up over it. Maybe wait for the remake and see if that comes across better or not.

For me personally, it was always love at first fucking sight. But then again, I have been reading books and searching for any other fiction in this same genre for years, so that might have helped. Not with all of the characters, but certainly with the settings and concepts it started introducing from the start.

I cheated to finish the game as well. Not real cheats per se, but I savescummed my way to completing every quest in the optimal amount of time and without getting infected or hurt too much. I heard there were different endings and I didn't want to "beat it" to find out that I got the worst ending. I'm going to go through it properly with Haruspex and Changeling now that I know how Day 12 works. The way people talked about how brutal it is, I thought all of the Bound were going to be infected on the last day; turns out I had saved up 5 panaceas/shmowders for nothing
>>
>>387633145

I absolutely love the game too and I'd agree with you and add one thing: the game is draining as hell. It does a very good job of communicating that hopelessness and the odds against you. The game is emotionally draining to get through and even if you're fully invested in the characters and the narrative, the game might just break you anyway.
>>
>>387622573

Oh fuck, we did the book recommendation thing a few weeks ago (it always comes up). I should fucking save it and just copy-paste it for future use... But if you have been in most previous IPL threads the odds are you've seen recommended most of what I have on offer: Borges, Kafka, Pavić, Schulz, Bulghakov, Platonov, Calvino, Cortázar, Bradbury, Abe, Camus, Ajvaz and you want to ease up, then Murakami is not a bad introduction to magical realism...
I could come up with a better more detailed list (and maybe also save it for my own reference) but it might take a while.

>actively being sabotaged by Activision
To be fair it's not like they handled the development all that well. The blunt of the fault still lies with Troika. They had 4 years to develop the game and still underestimated the amount of work required, as well as deciding to use an engine that was still in development forcing them to co-develop it alongside Valve taking even more dev time away from the actual game.

I mean, sure, but then Valve was like "HL2 has to come out on Source first." Troika was fine with that and was just going to fix bugs and stuff in the mean time but Activision refused to let them even touch it.

That's some Microsoft shit.

Just use the plus patch for your second playthrough and go through the restored content... If you like it enough use it for your next playthroughs. If you think you've seen everything after a few playthroughs you could try out Clan Quest Mod, the only mod with quests that aren't ridiculously bad. That's about it, most/all other content mods for VTMB suck ass imo.

I remember stopping around the point when I encountered a scared cop with absolutely atrocious voice acting. This isn't me being opinionated, he was slurring his words and everything. It seems to me they didn't even get professional voice actors for the side characters.

Their latest blog is about two months old, the release date is set on late fall this year (though I do expect it to be delayed into spring next year at the earliest), Marble Nest was damn great... I would not worry about the state of the project quite yet. IPL are many things, but not scammers or quitters.
They are really not good at communicating though.

Was that in the tutorial?

Or are you talking about Chunk? Cause if so, fuck you.

>roika was fine with that and was just going to fix bugs and stuff in the mean time but Activision refused to let them even touch it.
Nah. They were allowed to work on it, they were even paid for it, just not enough for the entire staff to get paid.

>>387639515
Are you retarded? Game probably has some of the best VA in gaming.

Also not sure what cop you're referring to, I can't recall any scared cops with slurry VA...

The game was insanely ambitious though.

The facial animations was pretty state of the art, there's a fuckton of voiced dialogue and Bloodlines still puts most other RPG's to shame when it comes to stuff like Nosferatu and Malkavian actually significantly changing the game. There's actual roleplaying.

he wasn't a named character. It was just some dude you had to convince to leave the area. I know the main characters are well acted, which is why the completely amateur voice acting put me off.

How fucking retarded do you have to be to not realize this was intentional?

He's supposed to be a fat loser cop.

>>387639490
aw man thats a damn shame, thanks anon
>>
>>387639905
I know, which is why a small team of like 30-40 people maybe should think of scaling things down a bit.

I mean I'm glad they didn't since the results were still wonderful, but still. The game coming out so buggy and unfinished as it was is still on Troikas hands, and Activation were actually reasonably patient and lenient with them, at least compared to how publishers acts these days.

>tfw want that hardcover art book
>dont want to drop $105 for it
>probably going to end up justifying it to myself by spending $500 on books for college and then questioning the harm in $100 more

Are you talking about the fat cop in santa monica? On the way to get to the painting gallery? If so, the VA wasn't slurry, it was intentionally retarded because the character was insanely retarded. You meet him again in Downtown and he talks a lot more there. There's a point in the game where he actually thinks he can stop you and tells you to back off because he doesn't wanna hurt you. Guy is purposefully portrayed as very naive. I'm not sure where you got this idea that his VA was accidentally miscast or whatever.

>tfw they were planning on doing a Arcanum sequel using the Source engine similar to the style VtmB but the deal fell through

Man, that would have been something to see.

There is literally not a single bad character in this game

Never played Arcanum. What makes it worth playing?
>>
>>387642545
it's a steampunk rpg which is completely broken combat wise and features a lot of black isle's trademarked manchild humor.

>>387640124
no he was just some dude in a storeroom early in the game.
>>
>>387643337
The guy in the tutorial? Yeah, he's an odd case. His lines are pretty low quality (both in read and sound quality) for some reason. Mercurio has this same problem the first time you meet him as well. His first line is horrible in the same way as the cop's. Luckily his next lines are fine.
It's a weird two-off thing. I wouldn't use it as an example of the rest of the game.
