a lot of the game just fits together really well. maybe it didn't have the same base appeal as the others so VII and X reached more people. it also came at the end of the PS1's life, so that might have had something to do with it as well.
either way I love it.

I just felt that IX was something fresh to the non-Japan market, while Japan had plenty of similar high fantasy games in Mana/Grandia/Fire Emblem/Chrono/Xeno/Suikoden/etc/etc that never reached out to the fantasy starved market worldwide market like IX did.

It took fifteen seconds to start every battle. That alone makes it the worst FF

9 is the worst final fantasy entry. Its a glorified fan game that was tedious and did nothing new or exciting. Formulaic and completely forgetful.

Obviously a Final Fantasy game is going to sell well but that's why I said comparatively.VII sold ~12 million, VIII sold ~9 million and IX sold ~5.5 million, that's a pretty big drop off in terms of sales, granted those are lifetime but I'd imagine it would still be relative back when the games were released in terms of sales.
