This is not a JRPG thing. Parents of characters barely ever come up in anything unless it's for a specific character development reason or just the outright focus of the plot. They'd just be a nuisance in the story if they did.

It's really not such a bad thing. I know this is a novel concept to today's generation but in the old days when you turned 18 you were expected to leave your parents and start making your own way through life, not continue to leech off them until they got too old to carry you anymore.

It annoys the shit out of me that the teenage MCs never turn to their parents for a word of advice or something, even if they are alive. But this is something which makes me rage in anime as well.

I sort of understand the symbolics behind it (as a teenager, you start to explore and figure out life on your own) but it still feels unrealistic.

That's because its boring. Relationships stop being exciting after the initial passion wears off. I mean I agree it sucks to never see vidya characters actually in a relationship, but that's why its not an objective. Noone wants to have a dating sim where you have to listen to the girl bitch about her day at work and then have to clean out the gutters so she'll shut up and make you dinner.

GTA V unironically has everything you're asking for. From the difficulty of a parent and child from two vastly different generations to relate to each other, to the kid making stupid mistakes and the parent having to pick up the slack, to the kid trying to estrange himself from his parents' arguments and ultimately from them altogether, to how the absence of a parent's good guidance and the parent's shitty lifestyle and demeanor can negatively influence the development of their children. GTA V also tackles the misery of the mid-life crisis through one of its protagonists, although in typical GTA fashion, his glory days were when he was an infamous bank robber.

A bit of a corollary though, it's a game where you really have to do everything, down to the most mundane of hangouts with everyone, like going drinking and playing golf, and side activities, like smoking weed, to get the whole story behind the characters. So if that doesn't appeal to you, I would stay away, since though the main story touches on these things, they get far more fleshed out if you do the side activities.

In general, as you probably know, V has three protagonists. All of them offer different perspectives on how parents can influence the actions of their children. Michael is the parent currently influencing his children, Franklin is the child who had a mother with good intentions but lived a shitty lifestyle and paid for it, and who is still suffering the emotional repercussions of it, and Trevor is the child whose mother actively tried to sabotage his development into a normal kid, and is one of the many contributing factors to the demeanor you will see he has if you choose to pick the game up again.

But like I said, you will really get the meat of what I speak about in the side activities and trying to get closer to the other characters in your own free time. It seems like V's gameplay doesn't appeal to you, if you dropped it after only an hour. But trust me, it's there if you look for it.

The divorce rate is actually lower when you start to control for all factors, e.g. age of the people, number of previous partners, etc., etc.

Honestly first Nier's problem is that initially it was written as a brother/sister story where focus progressively shifts towards the feelings between Nier and Kaine and culminates in ending D which kinda overshadows the impact from all Yonah-related scenes. Automata is almost entirely about a pair of loners who find their meaning of life in each other so i'm hopeful that Taro's next game will be purely dedicated to the theme of parent-offspring relationships without anything to really distract you from it.
