It played the normalcore games that normies wanted, and it had the japanese games that hardcore gamers craved, AND it also had shooters dudebros like.

It was the weakest of the bunch, but still quite impressive. It had the best marketting and it was the most easily pirated console as well. Plus it played PS1 games that were by far the most popular from the previous gen. The DVD player was a nice plus, but it's not the biggest factor.

The PS2 was fantastic for the exclusives and a few multiplats (later releases of the Prince of Persia games for example had bug fixes not done for other systems) it was also dirt cheap and lots of people had one but for the majority of vidya it underperformed heavily usually resulting in half the performance and visual quality compared to XBOX which was the best console of that gen.

As an oldfag who was 11-12 when this console cycle started I can safely say that the PS2 was the console to have solely for it's software library. I got a GC for Xmas the year it launched. It held me over for a while, but there were maybe 4-5 games on it and after a few months I kind of just reverted to playing my old PS1 games. I finally got a PS2 the following summer. GTA3 was incredible at the time and I probably sunk more time into that than any other game. It had a ton of great titles that I was able to experience for the first time especially with RPGs which were pretty much non existant on GC, especially at launch. Over the course of both consoles lifespan I'd say it was 80/20:PS2/GC as far as actual game playing goes. Never had an Xbox though. Played Halo at friends houses, but that's it. Was never interested in its library.

You can get one of those adapters you hate to get more controller slots.

And the PS2 is capable of using component cables for certain games that support it, like God of War 2. Otherwise, try using S-Video cables instead of the yellow composite cable that the PS2 ships with. You'll get a sharper picture that way because the s-video cable splits the picture data across multiple pins.

The PS2 controller hasn't changed much since the original PS1c but it has never been a bad controller. All the consoles had memory cards. But what really made the PS2 better then the Xbox?

I think the Xbox was underrated as hell. All the games that they shared look better on the Xbox, Xbox had 4 controller ports and the Xbox exclusives were pretty good. They made a ton of Japanese games for the Xbox and I think it had the better controller. It's a shame that the original Xbox is the best of the 3 Xbox consoles.
