The only Total War game I've played is Rome. How different is this one and is it still worth getting despite the upcoming sequel?

Very and yes.
Very different, I think they're the pinnacle of the Total War series and despite being pricey as a lump sum, I pick the DLC up as I go with the goal of owning a complete master game for Warhammer fantasy

Does it carry over to 2? Sounds pretty goy
Very and yes, i you own this one and the sequel they are going to release a combined map(supposedly weeks after the release of the sequel) so you can play as all the factions from both games.
I like TW WH a lot but i do feel some things got gutted, one big problem is Sieges, they are really shit in WH, unit formations are also gone. But those are pretty much my only problems with it, other than that it's pretty good.

The whole goal is to have one massive over world by the time the third game is out, what would be the fucking point of not linking the games?

Unit formations are not gone they just use a different hotkey

C-come again?

There's no army formations in warhammer.
There's a mod for unit formations, it's pretty neat.

Pirate the dlc

Absolutely. Game 1 features the old world with the following factions:
>Empire
>Vampire Counts
>Greenskins
>Dwarfs
>Bretonnia - Free
>Wood Elf - DLC
>Beastmen - DLC
>Norsca - DLC, free for pre-ordering 2
>Warriors of Chaos - DLC
All besides Empire also feature alternate subfactions, like Bretonnia has 3 different starts. Greenskins has a unique Goblin sub-faction.
Total Warhammer 2 will feature:
>High Elves
>Dark Elves
>Lizardmen
>Skaven
And on an entirely new map spanning Ulthuan, Naggaroth, Lustria and the Southlands. It's highly speculated Tomb Kings will be added at some point in the future, probably as DLC. Game 1 had a ton of content added over time, a lot for free too, so 2 will likely get just as much.
Both games shortly after release will be combined into one giant map. So there's just as much reason to still get the first game which on its own is probably the best total war there is. Every faction is unique and has its own style.
