Have you ever gone back and played a game's online mode, long after its heyday? Were there still people playing? Did you have any fun, or was it more depressing than anything?
Yes.
Warcraft III
All maps were either Castle Fight or DotA, hosted by bots.
Warzone 2100 has a few old buggers still playing matches, they're all insane good. It's a rough game to try and get into

Warcraft 3 is still active, the problem is most active players are in clans or Discords and only play within the group, rather than random games.

Still well after its heyday, though.

god damn. its heart breaking to see a game you had so much fun with years later be dead. its comparable to when a song that was once really important to you isn't fun to listen to anymore.

Did an event in GT6 a few weeks ago. Was full of people exploiting corner cuts. So yeah, there were people but none I would ever want to race against.
Red Dead Redemption's online mode is still somewhat active, surprisingly. Played some gang hideouts with a few guys earlier. Still fun and fairly populated
Since 2005 I've been playing a multiplayer Half Life mod called The Specialists. It's been around since 2001, so I'm not sure when its peak was.
From what I remember, the game had about 250 players on average in servers in 2006/early 2007, in version 2.1. For some reason, half of this game's community were people who play on roleplaying servers with proper mods for owning houses, jobs, basically GMOD RP before it was popular. It's the most bizarre thing I've ever seen in my time playing video games onlinebut I loved that shit.
In 2007, version 3.0 came out, the final release of the mod. There was a spike in popularity for a month, but then came the slow decline. In 2010 the official forums shut down without a word. Over the past 6 years I would see roleplay servers try to come back for one last hurrah, mappers making absolutely beautiful futuristic inner city centres with detailed apartments, offices, etc., only to have the four people in the server stand around and talk out of character for hours, it was depressing seeing this effort completely wasted.
Now I just checked the steam server list and it's showing there are no servers at all. I'm afraid to verify this for myself.

>old racing game
>only a handful of people still playing
>glitches to maintain way more speed than devs intended through turns
>corner cutting and or exploits to skip sections of tracks
>people still playing but this is what the active playerbase is
Is this what casual Smash players feel when they watch competitive Melee?

Mass effect 3 Mp a year or so ago. It was fun, most people I actually played with I'd meet up with the next day, like not on purpose, but the player base was just that small on PS3. (Have it on PC too but pirate fagged it for a playthough before Andromeda) Was kind of neat and it was good fun.

What game is that?
