I'd much rather go to a Japanese prison than a US prison, but it's still pretty strict. I remember seeing a documentary on their prison system, particularly for criminals convicted of more heinous crimes. They run it like a military camp. Physical training, marching in unison, making the prisoners take pride in their clothing, ensuring they spend a few hours each day reading/studying. It's pretty interesting. Honestly, it seems like a good middle ground between the total fucking chaos we call a prison system here in the US; one which breeds hardened criminals and has a horrible return rate; and the summer camps called prisons in Scandinavia. (but I guess those prisons work pretty well for non-violent offenders, could probably work here as well)


It's really twisted how bad our prisons are in the US. Privately owned, people making profit off of punishment of criminals. You don't get reformed citizens ready to commit to their communities by sending them into rape pits that demand you turn into a frenzied animal to survive.
