"PST's combat is shit" is a meme. It's much more involved than combat in Fallout 1/2, but much less so than in, say, Icewind Dale. It's "shit" relative to games that put all their focus on tactical combat systems because in PST combat is only there to be one of multiple possible outcomes of any given situation, same as in Fallout.

I've played and beaten Wasteland 2 and Fallout 2. Honestly, Wasteland wasn't all that interesting. The game is okay but I missed the way Fallout gave your character a lot of presence in the world. The Rangers felt very removed from from everything going on, thanks to their interchangeable lines and simple dialog options.

Fallout 2 is great though. The rebalanced SPECIAL makes it fun to fuck around with the system. I've heard good things about Underrail, it's another one I've been meaning to try.

You need to think about that in that all four rangers make what would be a regular player character in a non-party RPG. They're just different parts of a single entity.

That makes sense. I guess it comes back to that thing about having Fallout color my expectation of the genre. I'd even tried to roleplay a bit in Wasteland by selecting different dialog options with different characters based on what I wanted to say and who I thought would be the one to say it.

In the case of Wasteland 2, however, I don't think one could blame me. The game was trying very hard to be the second coming of Fallout by itself already, so the comparison is justified somewhat.
