I've never played a single Silent Hill game. Considering I hear they retcon and remake the same game like 4 times, where do I start?

The monsters in Silent Hill are probably the least threatening on average. Your average Joe protag can beat most of them to death with a heavy object with little difficulty or threat of retaliation in the games.
Assuming that escape is actually possible without having to faff about with the Silent Hill puzzles and mysteries and whatnot, that'd probably be the safest bet.
