fuckin great.
>>
looks worse than most of the games it claims to be inspired by and the screen flipping looks disorienting as fuck. some of the maps seem like blocky babby's first map too. it beats d44m i guess.
>>
>>387565124
is this bait?
>>
I think it's being advertised on /v/.
Also that it's hideous and pathetic that it has to ride on the reputation of Quake and Doom in its trailer rather than being able to stand on its own.
>>
>>387565217
its almost like its directly inspired by and is try to appeal to the audiences of said games....
>>
>>387564913
It's alright, all the fundamental stuff is there
movement is fun
weapons are varied and useful
enemies are effective but not too much so, they don't step on each others toes so to speak and force and force the player to think tactically about positioning etc
levels are OK not amazing but OK some of the scale of rooms is a bit weird though and encounters could be a little more interesting
One of the better throwback type fps in a long time just by sticking to the basics, It certainly makes a fool out of D44M and the new wolfenstein games.
>>387565214
Nope its a legitimately shit game, AAA production value but the game ain't good
>>
>>387565525
It's not directly inspired by. The maps ar light years behind id products and the most important feature by a mile in classic fps is maps

This is what you call "aping" or "biting"
>>
>>387565525
Should do so by actually being as good as them - but why bother when you can throw a few references in the trailer and leave it at that.
>>
It's fun, but pretty easy even on hard. I'm hoping in the next episodes they'll add more enemies, more complex level layouts, and nerf rockets/mortars because I took out every boss in like three seconds since I found that one bonus room with the crossbow and the sword in like level 2.

I don't think it looks very good but according to LGR there's a ton of graphics settings so you might be able to tweak it. I think a lot of people forget that Quake 1+2 were technological marvels when they were released, merely making blocky 3d models and calling it retro is kind of an insult.

So far I'm up to level 4. Pretty good for the most part. I can see Quake inspiration in terms of level design although the other bits are rather questionable, at least to the point where I'm at. Most of my complaints are kind of nitpicking with certain parts of maps. For example on this one you start outside this church which is locked and requires a yellow key. The key is actually right in the back of the shot. Kind of feels like busy work. The rest of that level was pretty good though and that's where the Quake design really shines in that it's nonlinear but at the same time the way the level is kind of designed in a way that guides you through looping ways through the map
>>
>>387569356
>seriously contradict eachother
not really
>>
>>387573880
There was a missed opportunity for like zombies or whatever coming out of the graves when you pick up the first key on that map
>>
>>387573880
there is some quake like design where it's a single level so you can go anywhere you can see basically but there is also some wandering around more open-ish maps like redneck rampage which is also neat.

>>387573069

After the gator miniboss on the third level I kind of got lost a bit. Turned out there was a tiny little hole in the shadows you had to crouch through to get to the exit.

Kind of tempted to restart on a higher level though. Don't know why I went with the easy difficulty. Plus I've missed a bunch of secrets

I mean, the boss is easy either way, but it really shouldn't actually spawn until the doors open. I guess the crossbow will be neat for speedrunning. Otherwise it's just used to spam through doors for easy kills. It doesn't have utility beyond that. It's not even that powerful.

Yeah I'm gonna wait till the steam reviews come in and see how the 2nd and 3rd episode turn out.
Also my problem with Strafe as an old school shooter is that the game pretty much penalizes you for going fast and taking risks. Health is extremely scarce and only comes from food dispensers which heal a very tiny portion of health and shields are expensive as fuck to print off. This game seems to do it a little better in that there's a bit better because there's plenty of health so it encourages a fast and semi reckless play style.

You can disable the midair/underwater flipping. I have no idea what it is supposed to add to the game, it will make things harder in all combat situations

Movement is way too simple. I'm not a fan of "advanced movement" that's incredibly mechanically easy. It's the same as Painkiller's "keep jumping and you go faster :^)", just terrible

Just strafing while jumping repeatedly will quickly net you top speed, and the crouch slide thing is basically a babbified version of the Q4/CPMA crouch slide, only it's an instant boost and requires no prior accumulated momentum to do

On Episode 1 at least, there isn't. You'll get the occasional 10 guys in a shootout, but to be fair, Quake also never had Doom-like enemy numbers

This is very much in that vein, fewer enemies than something like, say, Serious Sam, but they're on average more resilient and placed strategically
>>
The game is rather nice, although it feels more like a mediocre doom wad rather than a standalone game you're paying for.

Weapons are somewhat generic: akimbo shotguns, chuper chopgun, sword and maybe the granade launcher are interesting, but gunplay feels good.

And throwing objects is OP. It instagibs almost everyone.

I picked Harmony because even though it might look like shit to some people a lot of effort actually went into making those sprites. The dev (The same guy who made the TVR! wad) used the same method a lot of developers used for making sprites back in the 90s, i.e. he made clay sculptures, painted them, and took pictures of them from different angles and in different poses before cleaning them up with photoshop and converting the pictures to work with the color palette.

Point is just because something doesn't match your aesthetic tastes doesn't mean no work went into it

The maps in general have several little errors

Pic related, floating tree, bullet holes where it should be rooted

Dusk's memory footprint is actually less than 500mb, the min memory requirement is meant more for Windows 7 so the game doesn't get pushed into the page file by basic operating system processes

Just finished the demo on normal difficulty. There's 10 levels total unless there was a secret level I missed. Pretty enjoyable. The boss could have been a bit more interesting though. Also of all the "puzzles" you could use from Build games why would you use the fucking guessing game switch puzzles? The soldiers could be a bit tougher too. For an enemy that doesn't appear until the last two levels they're a straight up joke and go down in even less shots than the cultists. Gonna wait and see how the second and third episode turn out before I actually buy it though.
>>
>>387586596
Oh and I'm not sure because I didn't try it myself but as
>>387575853
mentioned you can break the episode 1 boss with the crossbow. The wall penetration idea probably isn't that great of an idea.

Does this piece of shit even feature any architecture at all? All i see is square rooms that look like a babies "first made map" Quake had great architecture.
>>
>>387587350
You're still here?
>>
>>387587457
I'm not the oher guy who was talking about textures, many people think textures is what defines an old game, but architecture it's what made old games look fantastic back then. Low textures don't matter that much if you can make good architecture, but that takes actual skill and not some nobodies pretending to be devs.

Dusk looks like a really fun game for 1999. Let's be honest here: without the nostalgia factor this is just some old farts indie-retro homage that isn't up to modern industry standards. If you want to jerk yourself off to bad graphics, rat-in-a-cheese-maze level design, and hackey fps tropes go right for it.
>>
>>387588063
Nigger are you serious, the modern industry standards are a fucking joke and the main reason people look forward to anything that resembles Doom, Quake or Duke

That's being too generous, indie garbo like this isn't even up to 1998 standards.
>>
>>387588359
They don't have to, they appealing to nostalgia by trying to replicate retro shooter on a very amateur level. It's not about making a good game.
>>

I thought the switch "puzzle" was a funny reference when it was right after the "Duke Brothers" boss. It was clever then, but seeing how it was done again right before the boss was the dumbest shit.

Also, the soldiers are late in the game because you're getting closer to the city. It has less to do with gameplay and more with story at that point. Sort of how every Quake episode starts with possessed grunts and they disappear once you go through the slipgate.

Eh, some areas look pretty good while others feel kind of empty til enemies start spawning. First thing that comes to mind is Sandy Peterson's levels. Ugly as fuck for the most part but they're still pretty fun to play and they have some pretty creative traps and ambushes. The level design seems more reminisce of Build games like Redneck Rampage in terms of architecture as opposed to Quake's abstract and sometimes nonsensical level design.

The flow of the levels is what reminds me of Quake. They're pretty open and there's plenty of places to explore but at the same time the way they're designed kind of guides you through along through the level often looping around the level. Not sure if that makes too much sense to you or not.

Looking back and thinking about it the one I posted kind of made me chuckle
> Get switch puzzle done
> Beat boss after dying the first time with about 50 health left
> Go through the door the boss came out of
> 6 switches on the wall
> Oh God this shit again...
> Flip switch
> Door right next to me opens revealing the second stage of the boss fight

Nice little twist, although it'd be more interesting if the second boss phase was different from the first boss phase.
>>
>>387589286
This didn't happen to me because I emptied my crossbow into the giant doors before hitting the first switch. All that came out was a single giant horse with literally 1HP. I never saw the second one.
>>
>>387589072
>The level design seems more reminisce of Build games like Redneck Rampage in terms of architecture
Which means it really doesn't feature any architecture at all, but basic shapes.

>Not sure if that makes too much sense to you or not.
It does, still i fail to see the appeal in something that doesn't put enough detail into crafting a map, i don't care about ugly textures, or old engines but amateur level design is just not something i would put money into.
>>
Holy shit. I just finished Episode 1. Why the fuck did they let me play this so early? All I want is more Dusk. Survival just isn't the same. Every map was excellent and totally unique from the last. Love it.
>>
>>387589403
Suit yourself. If it's not for you it's not for you. I personally enjoyed it but like I said, I'm still on the fence about getting it and I'm not planning on preordering it. I'm just gonna wait for it to come out and see what people have to say about the second and third episodes before I think about buying it.

None. Play both. What kind of retard crisis are you having where you can only play one game or the other?

1. I am an ugly baby who tried Quake and couldn't kill everything with the super shotgun so I deleted it immediately
B. Brush based mapping scares me, and I refuse to learn new things
