Could /v/ tell me how do they mass produce a game when it's only on one disk? Do they copy the game to hundreds of computers then start burning blurays?
>>
>>387519858
"Gold Disks" are usually send off to CD factorys where they just copy the code of the original CD and burn it unto the final disks that land in the store. The gold disk gets destroyed afterwards.

But how can they burn millions of disks in a short period of time?
>>
>>387519858
usually they make a huge cylinder then slice it up on one of those Deli cutters, then they send it to india where children scoop out the core and turn it into DLC.
>>
>>387520009

>The gold disk gets destroyed afterwards.

why? because the gold disk contains the source code?

Exactly. Copyright protection and obfuscating gets added during the copying process

might as well ask here, how did they make games back in the nes/master system era? computers werent even a thing until the 90s so what the hell did they make the games on ?
>>
>>387520491
Not really.
Optical manufacturing hasn't changed much since the 90s, the same concepts for CD manufacturing are true for DVDs and Bue-Rays.
>>
>>387519858
Spotted the faggot who doesn't know how game development work. In the modern era of game development the disc is gold a lot sooner and when the game goes gold what this means for you retards out there is that if you buy a game day one and play offline there is a chance sometimes higher than others depending on what the game is and for this one again that has went gold and then got delayed and then went gold again no shit Sherlock that the version of the game on that disc is not going to be the same as when the game comes out especially on Steam as a whole fresh download where everything just downloads anyway.

>>
>>387520250
No, the source code exists only on the dev machines, the gold disk is the compiled program. Reason it's destroyed is so the factory company doesn't end up with a bunch of copy-ready media that may end up being sold to a chink company or something if the factory goes bankrupt. >>387520420 is partially right in that the factory adds all the cd-specific DRM, which if it's the only protection the software has, can make the gold copy especially valuable.

You know those big machines that you sometime see in retro futuristic games like Fallout and stuff?

They take paper that has holes in it to represent 1's and 0's. They basically popped holes into paper, and put those into a machine. They do this thousands of times and the computer stores this.

When they're done doing this, the computer prints out the board that are used inside NES/SMS games. Once this happens, they can just copy the board using a 3D printer.

Come on. Mechanical computation was a thing in the 1800s
>>
>>387521238
That was also the reason why people recently chimped out about the starcraft gold disk.

Imagine what would've happened if the unprotected source code got into the public.

those old wax cylinder players, they were truly analog, you just wind it up and put in a cylinder and music played, i wonder why nobody has tried making a truly non-electric music player again, something that actually plays songs, not just like a novelty music box, but actual music
>>
>>387522918
Fast decay is what I am guessing. Gramophones and phonographes put huge wear and tear onto the medium they are playing. Vinyls on gramophones are quickly scratched by the sharp playback head and phonogrpah cylinders just decay naturally like cassette tape but faster because they are so sensitive
>>
>>387523509
with 3D printers so readily available, i don't see how a suitable material can't be found, nor a decent solution for the needle.

they don't burn them, they use a kind of master disc mold made of metal with inverted grooves called a "stamper" and put it in a molding machine, where molten polycarbonate is injected to make an exact duplicate but with normal grooves. It's not as fast as a printing press but it does make like one disc every few seconds

at that point it's just a clear disc of plastic that still needs protective coatings and labels and shit, but the stamper has all the data from the original disc and thus so do all the duplicates that were injection-molded from it.

Making the stamper itself is a long process that requires use of a big glass "master" disc

i guess you've never heard of player pianos?
>>
>>387523828
I guess its not worth the effort. Outdated tech.

>>387523903
Impressive that we can make accurate injection molds with micrometers of details
>>
>>387523828
Because there is no demand or need driving someone to invent a direct successor to the vinyl record player, or a new analog medium at all. You will never be able to top the convenience of digital files and the hipsters who buy vinyl will never adopt a new technology.

How they created the first computer without a computer to do so?

Like they started messing things until something appeared on screen?

I've always had this question
>>
>>387524414
>implying there was a screen
>>
>>387524152
i only heard one once, when i was a child it made the noteblocks play, it didn't play a recorded song, i haven't kept up with player pianos, are they different now?

>>387524156
>>387524214
i can't be the only one that thought about this just now, the need and convenience would be that you don't need electricity, and just wind it up
>>
>>387524763
player pianos aren't any different nowadays than they've always been but they are definitely machines capable of playing recorded music without electricity. Mine can operate on just its foot pedals and it works by blowing air through holes in a long scrolling roll of paper to read which keys to press down
>>
>>387524223
